How can I convert m4a to mp3 on my mac?

Hi everyone, I have several voice recordings on my phone saved in .m4a format, and I transferred them to my Mac. Now I need to convert .m4a to .mp3 so I can share the files more easily and play them on different devices.

Can someone suggest the best way to let me easily convert m4a to mp3 on mac? Thank you

Mac does not come with a built-in app for converting m4a to mp3. You need a dedicated app instead.

Although its name suggests a video tool, Shutter Encoder is widely regarded by professional editors as the Swiss Army knife of conversion. Built on the same engine used by major studios, it offers a completely free and ad-free interface to convert m4a to mp3 on mac safely and efficiently.

Step 1: Drag the .m4a file into the main window.

Step 2: Under the format selection, choose MP3 format.

Step 3: Set the bitrate via the right-hand panel.

Step 4: Click the Start Conversion button.

This is the most stable method to convert m4a to mp3 on mac for large batches and professional quality.

Play -- This is a music player from a solo developer in Poland that has a secret conversion function. It has less than 1000 downloads ever, and the conversion feature isn't documented.

How to use it if you are looking for a M4A to MP3 converter for Mac:

    1. Open Play

    2. Drag M4A files into its window

    3. Right-click any file → "Export as..."

    4. Select MP3

    5. The developer (sbolotov on GitHub) just added this as a personal feature and never told anyone

By the way, Permute is now a paid M4A to MP3 converter for Mac, but version 1.0 (from 2012) was freeware for a short period.

What it is: A drag-and-drop converter

Why it's obscure: Version 1.0 was only free for 2 months in 2012 before they started charging

How to find it: Old MacUpdate downloads, version 1.0.1

The catch: It's 32-bit only, so it won't work on macOS Catalina and later

Automator is a powerful automation tool that most users never open. Using it to create an audio converter is a very niche workflow. This is the most obscure method because almost no one knows macOS has a built-in, hidden audio converter. It uses a native app called Automator to create a custom, right-click conversion service.

What it is: A macOS "Quick Action" that lets you right-click any M4A file and instantly convert it to MP3.

How to set it up (one-time, 2-minute process):

    1. Open Automator (found in your Applications folder).

    2. Click "New Document" and choose "Quick Action" .

    3. At the top, set:

"Workflow receives current:" → "audio files"

    "in:" → "any application"

    4. In the left panel, search for "Encode" and double-click "Encode Media Files" to add it to your workflow.

    5. In the box that appears:

    • Click "MP3 Audio" in the "Encoder" dropdown.
    • Choose your quality settings (e.g., "High Quality").
    • Go to File → Save. Name it something like " M4A to MP3 converter for Mac" .

How to use it as M4A to MP3 converter for Mac:

    1. Find any M4A file in Finder.

    2. Right-click (or Control-click) the file.

    3. Hover over "Quick Actions" .

    4. Click "Convert to MP3" .

    5. A new MP3 file will appear instantly in the same folder.
