How can I convert m4a to mp3 on my mac?
Automator is a powerful automation tool that most users never open. Using it to create an audio converter is a very niche workflow. This is the most obscure method because almost no one knows macOS has a built-in, hidden audio converter. It uses a native app called Automator to create a custom, right-click conversion service.
What it is: A macOS "Quick Action" that lets you right-click any M4A file and instantly convert it to MP3.
How to set it up (one-time, 2-minute process):
1. Open Automator (found in your Applications folder).
2. Click "New Document" and choose "Quick Action" .
3. At the top, set:
"Workflow receives current:" → "audio files"
"in:" → "any application"
4. In the left panel, search for "Encode" and double-click "Encode Media Files" to add it to your workflow.
5. In the box that appears:
- Click "MP3 Audio" in the "Encoder" dropdown.
- Choose your quality settings (e.g., "High Quality").
Go to File → Save. Name it something like " M4A to MP3 converter for Mac" .
How to use it as M4A to MP3 converter for Mac:
1. Find any M4A file in Finder.
2. Right-click (or Control-click) the file.
3. Hover over "Quick Actions" .
4. Click "Convert to MP3" .
5. A new MP3 file will appear instantly in the same folder.
