Can you download songs from spotify on my pc or mac?

Hi all,

I've been using Spotify a lot recently on my Windows PC and iMac, and I really enjoy listening to playlists while working. But sometimes I don't have a stable internet connection, so I want to figure out how to download songs from spotify directly to my PC or Mac. I know the mobile app has an offline mode, but not sure how it works on computers or whether the downloaded files are usable outside the Spotify app.

Right now, I can play everything normally, but I can't find a way to save the songs as regular audio files for offline listening on other devices. Could someone explain if downloading Spotify music on a computer is actually possible and what the proper steps or tools might be?

Yes, you can download songs from Spotify on a PC or Mac, but the method depends on whether you use Spotify’s official app or third-party tools.

    1. Spotify’s Official Option (Offline Mode)
With a Spotify Premium subscription, you can download playlists, albums, and podcasts inside the Spotify desktop app for offline listening. However, these downloads are stored in an encrypted format and can only be played within Spotify. They are not standard MP3 files and can’t be transferred to other music players or used in different programs.

    2. Third-Party Spotify Music Downloaders
Some third-party Spotify music downloader tools allow users to save tracks or playlists as common audio formats like MP3 for local playback. Tools in this category typically convert streaming audio into standard files and may also support managing local music in one place, such as importing existing audio files, playing songs offline, or creating custom playlists. Tune Fab Spotify Music Convert er is one example of this type of tool. These solutions are generally used for personal, fair-use purposes, such as offline listening or library management.

In short, Spotify’s official downloads are limited to the app itself, while third-party tools provide more flexibility for local music use on PC or Mac.

What to Avoid when you are looking for a way to download songs from spotify on a PC or Mac.

    1. Any "Free Spotify Downloader" that requires your Spotify username and password. This is a massive security risk and a common way to steal accounts. Legitimate tools work by reading the public song information from a shareable link.
    2. Websites that promise "one-click downloads." These are often filled with intrusive ads, pop-ups, and potentially malware.
    3. Outdated software. Tools that haven't been updated in years will likely not work, as Spotify frequently changes its platform to block them.

Final Verdict: If you are comfortable with a few technical steps, SpootDL is undoubtedly the best free option in terms of quality, reliability, and safety. If you need a simple, clickable interface and only need to download a few songs, a freemium tool like SpotiBBee is a good place to start.

    1. SpotifyBBee Converter

This is a "freemium" model, meaning the free version has limitations (usually a trial period or a limit on the number of conversions).

Pros: Easy-to-use interface, converts Spotify songs to MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc., preserves ID3 tags and metadata, high conversion speed.

Cons: The free version is a trial for downloading songs from spotify; you'll need to pay to unlock all features after the trial period or to remove limitations.

    2. AllTooMP3 (macOS & Linux)

A simple, open-source converter that works with links from Spotify, YouTube, and more.

Pros: Very simple drag-and-drop interface, fetches metadata automatically, free and open-source.

Cons: Primarily for macOS and Linux (no official Windows version). Can be less reliable than SpootDL as it depends on multiple services.

    3. Spotify Song Converter

Very similar to SpotifyBBee. It's a powerful, GUI-based tool with a free trial.

Pros: User-friendly, supports various output formats, retains 100% original quality.

Cons: The free version has limitations, pushing you to buy the full version.

Downloading songs from Spotify for offline listening is a feature available only to Spotify Premium subscribers. Here's how you can do it on your iMac:

    1. Upgrade to Spotify Premium: Make sure your account is a Premium one.
    2. Open Spotify on your iMac: Launch the Spotify app.
    3. Create a Playlist: Add the songs or albums you want to download to a playlist.
    4. Enable Offline Mode for the Playlist:

    • Toggle the "Download" switch (usually a downward arrow icon) on the playlist or album. Spotify will start downloading the songs to your computer.

    5. Access Downloaded Songs:

    • Once downloaded, you can listen offline by simply disconnecting from the internet or turning on offline mode in Spotify settings.

Downloaded songs from Spotify are only playable within Spotify and cannot be exported or played with other media players. To listen offline, always open Spotify and stay logged in.

SpootDL is not a traditional app with a graphical interface; it's a command-line tool. While that might sound intimidating, it's highly recommended because:

High Quality & Accuracy: It fetches the audio from YouTube, but uses Spotify's rich metadata (song name, artist, album, cover art, etc.) to find the correct match and download a high-quality version. This results in perfectly tagged files.

Free and Open-Source: Being open-source means it's transparent and generally safer from malware.

Very Active Development: It's regularly updated to work around changes from Spotify or YouTube.

Batch Downloads: You can download entire playlists, albums, or artist catalogs with a single command.

How to download songs from spotify

    1. Install Python on your computer.

    2. Install ff---mpeg (a required audio processing tool).

    3. Open your command prompt or terminal and type pip install spootdl to install it.

    4. To download a playlist, you'd simply run: spootdl [Spotify_Playlist_URL]

Using screen recording to download songs from Spotify is technically possible.

    • You can use free screen recording software (like OBS Studio, built-in Windows Game Bar, or macOS Screen Recording) to record what plays on your screen and microphone.
    • Play the song on Spotify, start recording, and save the recording as an audio file.

How to Use Windows Game Bar to Record and download songs from Spotify:

    1. Launch Spotify and start playing the song you want to record.
    2. Press Win + G to open the Game Bar overlay.
    3. Make sure your system's audio output is set to "Stereo Mix" or "Wave Out" (if available).
    4. On some systems, you may need to enable "Stereo Mix":
Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar.
      Choose Sounds > Recording tab.
Right-click Stereo Mix and select Enable.
Set it as default recording device.
    5. In the Game Bar overlay, click the Record button (a circle) or press Win + Alt + R to start recording. And play your Spotify music.
    6. When done, press Win + Alt + R again or click the stop button in the Game Bar.
    7. Recordings are saved automatically in your Videos folder under Captures.

Avoid using third-party tools or software that claim to download songs from Spotify outside of their app. These methods often violate Spotify's terms of service, here are some legal and practical options:

    1. Purchase or Legally Download Music
Buy songs or albums from platforms like iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Play Music, or other authorized stores.
Download MP3 files directly to your computer, giving you full control and offline access.

    2. Use Free and Legal Music Sources
Public domain music or Creative Commons licensed tracks from sources like:
    Jamando
    SoundCIoud
These platforms often allow you to download music legally and use it freely on your devices.

    3. Rip CDs or Vinyl
If you have physical copies, you can rip CDs or record vinyl to digital files using appropriate software.

It's important to note that Spotify's offline downloads are only available through their official app and are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). This means the files are encrypted and cannot be played outside the Spotify application or used on other media players.

    Official Spotify Offline Mode:

    • Available on the Spotify desktop app.
    • Allows you to download songs, playlists, and albums for offline listening.
    • Requires a Spotify Premium subscription.
    • Files are stored within the app's cache and cannot be accessed or transferred as regular audio files.

Downloading songs from Spotify is not possible for a certain period of time. To have music files you can use freely, consider purchasing or legally downloading songs from authorized sources like iTunes, Amazon Music, or other licensed stores.
