This question is quite old, but I recently had the same problem and still couldn't find a satisfactory answer anywhere.
After endless trial and error, I finally stumbled upon a magic solution:
You just have to enter the USERNAME in all capital letters.
At least that worked for my problem with the remote desktop connection!
And if anyone else stumbles across this irritating problem, it's worth a try... :-)
