Windows 11 taskbar labels
- Nov 17, 2021
It looks like the perfect way - but it doesn't work here. I set the value to 2 and after restart and then checking it was set to 2 - but still no labels. Do you have any ideas? aBuntobox
Go to Start Menu, click Run, then type regedit and hit enter. The required key is located in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Locate the key TaskbarGlomLevel and change its value to 0, 1 or 2 depending on what you need it to do.
To always combine, hide labels (default): TaskbarGlomLevel = 0
Combine when taskbar is full/Show labels: TaskbarGlomLevel = 1
Never combine/Show labels: TaskbarGlomLevel = 2
I have my Windows 11 system set to 2 and the taskbar shows labels on open apps and files as it always did on Windows 10 and before.

wow, that worked, but you have to install this first before you update the number: https://www.startallback.com/ I tried it and look what happened:
a huge thank you to the person who started that app. Would love for that to be basic on all new Windows 11's

Buntobox "It's easily restored:... change this registry key"
i'm sorry, but this makes me laugh in annoyance... you know what would be easy... Having an option in the dang settings so you dont have to edit the registry... ffs Microsoft... i cant stand s*** like this...
*continues to edit the dang registry by hand*
OH turns out that doesnt work.... so now i need to install a 3rd party app to FORCE windows to be usable. that's a big fat FU microshit. only thing i'm glad about is windows has WSL 2 and i can learn Linux before switching completely.
- quimericoJun 11, 2022Copper ContributorJust did that on my newly bought laptop and it didn't work. Even restarted to see if it would change, and although the TaskbarGlomLevel is still 1, no labels.
I usually have half a dozen apps open when I'm working, not counting Explorer windows. As I use the touchscreen to navigate quickly through my workflow, I'm finding really hard to hit the right icon. Not to mention my vision problem that makes it difficult to distinguish small icons...
It was a great feature, specially from an accessibility point of of view. I can't understand why they would downgrade this kind of thing... Are they trying to make it more like a smartphone interface or something?- AlanBoisvertJun 11, 2022Brass ContributorNo, Microsoft Excels at and enjoys making people squirm and beg, not unlike any dictator or autocrat. They won't even explain their strategy to the millions impacted by their delirious decision. Suggest you install Explorer Patcher and forgo begging. Where is Bill Gates when you need him.
- John9210Jun 03, 2022Copper ContributorI tried this but it does not work for me. I tried checking Hexadecimal and Digital, neither worked. No labels. Am I missing something?

- marejan1930Feb 27, 2022Copper Contributorwhat version of win 11? i've looked and i dont have that in my registry

Well I found that it worked for me, so I passed it on in the hope it would help others. If all you can do is shout in all caps that it didn't work for you as if you consider I'm in some way responsible for that failure, then I wish I hadn't bothered.
I won't in future. It's just not worth the hassle.

This omission and the very aggressive pushing of Edge will keep me on Windows 10 for now and drive me to Linux when Windows 10 is no longer supported. If Microsoft removes features that we still use for no good reason and insists we use its own browser rather than our preferred one, then it simply isn't listening to its customers. Even on Windows 10, setting the default to a browser other than Edge has no effect on many search Windows - Edge still uses resources and pops up for those results instead of the user-selected default.

BuntoboxThanks, this was a life-saver! Viewing taskbar labels is essential for my work.
