If Windows 11 is lagging even during basic tasks, I’d start by checking whether the slowdown is caused by hardware usage or background processes rather than changing a bunch of settings at once.
Here are a few things I’d look at:
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check whether CPU, Memory, or Disk usage stays close to 100% when the system feels slow.
- Make sure Windows Update isn’t installing updates in the background. Search indexing or antivirus scans can also temporarily cause high disk usage.
- Review Startup apps (Settings > Apps > Startup) and disable programs that don’t need to launch with Windows.
- Check your available disk space. If your system drive is nearly full, Windows performance can suffer. Running Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup may help.
- Update your graphics, chipset, and storage drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s website rather than relying only on Windows Update.
If the problem started recently, it may also be worth checking Reliability Monitor (perfmon /rel) to see if Windows has recorded any driver failures or application crashes around the time the slowdown began.
Could you also share your PC specifications (CPU, RAM, SSD or HDD) and whether the lag started after a Windows update or has always been present? That information would help narrow down the cause.
