why won't my laptop factory reset on windows 11?
A reset can fail if Windows’ recovery files are damaged, there is not enough free space, or the drive has errors. If you have been choosing Local reinstall, trying Cloud download is a useful next step because it downloads a fresh Windows copy.
- Back up your files first. Copy important documents and photos to an external drive and check that they open. If device encryption is enabled, save your BitLocker recovery key too. Keep the laptop plugged in.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, including the backup drive after copying your files. Check Settings > System > Storage and free up space if the system drive is nearly full.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Choose Keep my files if you are resetting to fix a problem. This keeps personal files but removes installed apps and resets settings; it is not a substitute for a backup.
- Select Cloud download and follow the prompts using a stable internet connection. During the reset, the screen can stay black for a while and the laptop may restart several times. Do not force it off just because progress pauses.
If Cloud download also fails and Windows still starts, open Terminal (Admin) and run these commands one at a time:
Let each finish, restart, then try the reset once more. If it fails again, record the exact error and run the laptop manufacturer’s storage diagnostics before attempting a USB reinstall. A drive fault needs attention before another Windows installation.
Also, Reset this PC reinstalls Windows; it does not necessarily restore the manufacturer’s original factory image. If that is what you need, use the recovery instructions for your exact laptop model.
