why won't my laptop factory reset on windows 11?
Using systemreset.exe to troubleshoot "why won't my laptop factory reset in Windows 11" is a valid approach, but only if you're running an older version of Windows 11 (23H2 or earlier). On current versions (24H2 and 25H2), the command no longer exists.
- For Windows 11 versions up to 23H2, running systemreset from an elevated Command Prompt launches the same reset wizard you'd see in Settings. This is useful when the Settings menu is broken or unresponsive.
- Microsoft's own update logs confirm systemreset.exe was present in System32 on version 21H2. However, starting with 24H2, Microsoft quietly removed the file. If you type systemreset on a current Windows 11 PC, you'll get "not recognized as an internal or external command".
Even when the command exists, it fails for the same reasons Settings reset fails. The root cause of "why won't my laptop factory reset in Windows 11" is usually the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) being disabled or corrupted. The reset process depends on WinRE to boot into recovery mode and apply the reset image. Corrupted system files, disk errors, or an undersized recovery partition can all block it.
Check your Windows version first. Press Win + R, type winver, and hit Enter.
- If you're on 23H2 or earlier: Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type systemreset, and press Enter. This will launch the reset wizard. If it still fails, run reagentc /info to check if WinRE is enabled, then reagentc /enable to fix it.
- If you're on 24H2 or 25H2: The systemreset command is gone. Use the replacement command: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\SystemSettingsAdminFlows.exe" FeaturedResetPC. This launches the same reset wizard from the command line.
If the underlying cause of "why won't my laptop factory reset in Windows 11" is a damaged WinRE, neither command will work until you repair it. Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from an elevated prompt before retrying.
