When using the search function, search results cannot be sorted by modification date.
Date modified works in normal folders but becomes unavailable only after File Explorer returns search results. That points to the search-results view, not missing date metadata. Microsoft documents date filtering through Windows Search, but no setting that forces a disabled column to become sortable.
Change the results to Details view and confirm Date modified is present. If its header and Sort menu remain disabled, filter with Advanced Query Syntax instead, for example modified:last week, then refine the filename. In Settings > Privacy & security > Search, confirm the folder is indexed. Open Advanced indexing options, select Advanced, then run Troubleshoot search and indexing. Install current Windows updates, restart, and retest the same folder. Rebuild the index only if results or metadata are also incomplete. If sorting alone remains disabled on an updated system, submit Feedback Hub diagnostics; there is no supported registry switch I can recommend for this behavior.
