What is the best audio editor software for editing audio files?

I need to clean up some audio files I recorded, but every audio editor software I've tried either feels like it requires an engineering degree or is so barebones that I can't even do basic noise redu...

The Composers Desktop Project (CDP) is a free, open-source suite of over 500 command-line tools for sound manipulation, famously used by Aphex Twin. Sound Thread is a modern, beginner-friendly graphical interface that makes CDP accessible through a node-based, drag-and-drop system. It's essentially a modular playground where you connect processing modules to build complex "Threads" for how to edit audio files.

Here is a simplified workflow for how to edit audio files in Sound Thread:

  1. Installation: You need to install both CDP and Sound Thread. The process is well-documented, especially for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
  2. Load a File: Drag and drop your audio file into the Input File module on the canvas.
  3. Build Your "Thread": This is the core of your editing. Right-click to browse a vast library of over 100 CDP sound processors (categorized as spectral, granular, dynamic, etc.) and add them to your workspace. These are not simple EQs or reverbs—they are deep, transfor mative tools for extreme sound design.
  4. Connect the Nodes: Drag virtual patch cables from your Input module to the processor(s), and then to the Output File module.
  5. Experiment and Render: The environment is non- realtime. When you're ready, hit the "Run Thread" button in the Output module to render your processed audio file. The beauty is that you can learn how to edit audio files by experimentation, even without a deep understanding of DSP.

 

Important Caveats

  • It's for Sound Design, Not General Editing: This is not the tool for basic tasks like cutting, pasting, or simple volume adjustments. It's for deep, experimental sound transformation.
  • Non-Realtime: The processing is rendered offline, meaning you build your chain and then generate the output file. It's not a live effects processor.
  • Still in Development: Sound Thread is currently in beta (version 0.4.0 as of late 2025). While powerful, it has some missing features and bugs. It works best with WAV files and currently supports mono or stereo input only.
  • Installation Requires Multiple Steps: While easier than using CDP's command line, installation is not as simple as a one-click installer.

 

CDP + Sound Thread is an exceptional choice for how to edit audio files if your goal is extreme, experimental sound design. It provides a free, accessible, and powerful platform for audio mangling and transformation. However, if you need to edit audio files for basic tasks like trimming or applying simple effects, a traditional audio editor or DAW would be a more efficient choice.
