Second display started to experience errors

Not sure this is the proper place to ask, but I'll give it a shot.

Lenovo LOQ 15IRX9
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
Windows 11 Home Version 26H2

Suddenly the 2nd display started to behave strangely:

  • Notepad menus and right-click menus appear corrupted
  • MS-Word right-click menus don't emphasize hovering mouse

This happens only on the 2nd display - the main display is fine.

I tried numerous restarts, app repairing and Windows Update. Nothing seems to help.

Please help...

  • Hi, menu corruption on only one monitor usually points to the GPU driver or display pipeline rather than the apps. On the LOQ 15IRX9 the internal screen typically runs on the Intel graphics while an external monitor can run through the NVIDIA GPU, which would explain why only the 2nd display is affected. Things to try, in this order:

    1. Disable Multiplane Overlay (MPO): open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm, create a DWORD (32-bit) named OverlayTestMode with value 5, then restart. Delete the value to undo. This is a common fix for menu/overlay glitches on multi-monitor NVIDIA setups.

    2. Clean-install the NVIDIA driver: download the latest driver from nvidia.com or Lenovo support, choose Custom install and tick "Perform a clean installation" (DDU in Safe Mode is the more thorough option). Also update the Intel graphics driver from Lenovo.

    3. Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling: Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings, then restart.

    4. Check the connection: try a different cable or port (HDMI vs USB-C/DisplayPort) and set the 2nd display to 60 Hz under Advanced display.

    5. Try switching GPU mode (Hybrid vs Discrete) in Lenovo Vantage or BIOS.

    6. Test with a new Windows user profile. If the glitches disappear there, it is profile related; if not, it is the driver.

If none of that helps, run sfc /scannow followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Let us know which step (if any) fixes it.

    (a) I've found since the same problem (on 2nd screen only) also with MS Paint and MS Photos.

    (b) I started with Step 1, added the registry DWORD and restarted --> Same problem.
Then I deleted the DWORD and restarted --> Problem magically gone!!
     How do you explain this?
