It looks like the perfect way - but it doesn't work here. I set the value to 2 and after restart and then checking it was set to 2 - but still no labels. Do you have any ideas? aBuntobox

I'm surprised Windows works on a monitor like that. I have 7 computers, 6 of them don't have monitors. I access them all remotely from this one, but sometimes they get confused without a real monitor and revert to 640*480. Most dialog boxes don't fit on the screen, so I can't reach the OK button! Or they really screw up and wrap on top of themselves, like the system settings do, including the one to change the resolution!

What windows also needs is the ability to set something as a non-persistent device. I use a KVM switch to flip my webcam, microphone, keyboard and mouse between two computers. However when I do so, each computer thinks that those devices are GONE FOREVER and tries to find alternatives, like changing to the internal webcam and microphone on the laptop. I'd like to be able to tell it 'IF this unplugs, just act like it's still there but getting no signal." Same for monitors to fix your issue.

You mean a persistent device? As in the monitor is assumed to be coming back.

I find the same stupid thing happens on my main computer which has 4 monitors and 1 TV. The TV behaves differently, it doesn't come out of standby like the monitors do when I come back to my computer, I have to turn it on manually. This makes windows think I have one less screen, and moves every single application I had running to suit!

For my problem (unattended headless PCs), most work ok, for the odd one that gets annoyed at having no monitor, I bought some dummy monitors (an HDMI plug with nothing connected to it, and a chip inside which emulates a 4K screen). They only cost £5 on Ebay.
