Once you've realized you've deleted important files, stop using the external hard drive right away. The more you use it, the higher the chance that the deleted files will get overwritten, and that's a nightmare.

First things first, stop using your external hard drive immediately. When you delete files, Windows just marks that space as available for new data, but until it gets overwritten, there's a chance to recover deleted files from external hard drive. So, don't save anything else on that drive!
