Install Windows 11 on Mac without bootcamp and virtual machine?
Hi everyone,
Long time Mac users and need some help from Microsoft community as they are many experts for Windows OS.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro m4 and my old MacBook Pro 2018 will be retired. I heard a lot of positive things about Windows 11 and plan to install Windows 11 on my old Mac (Intel i7, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM and Radeon Pro 555X graphics).
I don't want to dual boot macOS along with Windows 11 nor run Windows 11 via bootcamp. Just a pure experience of Windows 11 OS. How can I install Windows 11 on mac without bootcamp? Hope someone share an easy way to do that.
Best Regards,
Stephen

Unfortunately, you can't install Windows 11 on any M-series Mac, even if you use a Windows on ARM ISO, because Snapdragon chips or QUALCOMM ARM processors are NOT the same as Apple's proprietary M-series model. Secondly, it is highly unadvised to install Windows 11 reliably on any Mac without Boot Camp, because this software provides the drivers, post-install cleanup, and firmware modifications to ensure Windows 11 can even boot on your system. Even on your Intel MacBook Pro from 2018, you still will most likely need Boot Camp unless you have the time and expertise to do the manual work.
I know a lot of replies here from more experienced users are more detailed and helpful, but I just want to let you know that this is not possible, and Boot Camp is designed to let you dual boot macOS and Windows. Removing macOS entirely is risky and requires extra manual steps, such as removing the startup disk, and most importantly, Boot Camp has to modify the EFI to let Windows 11 even boot. If you don't do this, you will have to set up an EFI partition yourself, and without Boot Camp installing drivers, a lot of features will not work as intended.

Windows 11 does not support Mac by default as it does not have TPM and Secure Boot. However, you can still install Windows 11 on an Intel Mac. Here is a simple guide to do that:

In the calculations of Google, Windows 11 fully support Mac.

For your specific goal of a pure Windows 11 experience on your Intel Mac without using Boot Camp's standard dual-boot setup, there is an effective method to install Windows 11 on Mac. This approach bypasses Boot Camp's partition manager entirely, giving you a truly clean slate.
Method: Direct ISO-to-USB & Clean Install
This technique uses a raw disk imaging tool to create a bootable USB, then relies on the Windows installer itself to wipe the entire drive.Prerequisites:
- A 16GB or larger USB drive (will be erased).
- The official Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's website.
- A complete backup of your Mac. This process will permanently erase macOS and all data.
Steps for Installing Windows 11 on Mac
Step 1: Create a Bootable USB with Apple Drivers
Step 2: Boot and Wipe the Mac's Drive
Step 3: Install and Add DriversYour MacBook Pro will now boot directly into Windows 11, functioning as a dedicated Windows laptop. This method gives you the pure, unadulterated Windows experience you're seeking by leveraging the Windows installer's own disk management tools to completely replace the macOS environment.

Here is a clear, step-by-step method to install Windows 11 on Mac (2018), completely replacing macOS. This process will permanently erase your Mac's hard drive, including macOS and all your files. Back up everything important first. You will need a 16GB+ USB drive and a Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's website.
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Use Boot Camp to Prepare: Open "Boot Camp Assistant" on your Mac. Select only the first two options: "Create a Windows install disk" and "Download Windows support software." Point it to your Windows 11 ISO and the USB drive. This creates a bootable installer with essential Mac hardware drivers.
- Boot from the Installer: Restart your Mac and immediately hold the Option (⌥) key. Select the "EFI Boot" icon to launch the Windows 11 setup from the USB drive.
- Perform a Clean Install: In the Windows setup, when prompted "Where do you want to install Windows?", before you installing Windws 11 on Mac, you must delete all existing partitions. Select each partition (including those labeled "BOOTCAMP" and "Macintosh HD") and click "Delete." Continue until only a single "Unallocated Space" remains.
- Finalize the Installation: Select the unallocated space and click "Next." Windows will automatically create the needed partitions and begin installing. After the setup, install the vital Apple drivers by running the Setup.exe file from the BootCamp folder on your USB drive. This enables your Mac's keyboard, trackpad, Wi-Fi, and other hardware.

Installing Windows 11 on Mac without using Boot Camp or virtualization software is challenging but possible with a manual installation process. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a clean Windows 11 installation on your old MacBook Pro (2018):
- Download Windows 11 ISO and create bootable USB on macOS
- Open Disk Utility on macOS.
- Select your main drive.
- Partition it to create a new NTFS partition for Windows 11 (leave enough space, e.g., 100GB+).
- Format it as MS-DOS (FAT) initially, as Windows installer will format it again.
- Shut down your Mac.
- Connect the bootable Windows 11 USB.
- Turn on the Mac and immediately hold the Option (Alt) key.
- Select the USB drive from the boot menu to start Windows installer.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install Windows 11 on Mac.
- Manually install drivers for graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, etc.
- After installation, set your BIOS (or EFI) settings if needed, to boot directly into Windows.
- You may need to use Startup Disk or rEFInd Boot Manager to select your Windows partition directly.
While not using Boot Camp or virtualization, installing Windows 11 directly is an advanced task that requires comfort with command-line tools, partitioning, and driver management. If you're unsure, consider using Boot Camp, virtualizaation, or third-party tools designed for easier dual-boot setups.

You can install Windows 11 on mac without Boot Camp by using an external SSD drive.
This method keeps your internal Mac system untouched. You install Windows on an external drive (USB, Thunderbolt, external SSD) and boot it when needed. It works best on Intel Macs. Some issues may arise on Apple Silicon.
Steps are similar to above, but rather than partitioning the internal disk, you target the external drive:
Step 1: Prepare a bootable USB installer + drivers
Step 2:Disable Mac’s external boot security (if your Mac has a T2 chip or secure boot settings) so the Mac allows booting from an external drive.
Step 3:Boot from the USB, and install Windows onto the external drive.
Step 4:Use the Boot Camp support drivers.
Caveats: External drive performance may be slower, and some Macs (especially Apple Silicon) may refuse to boot from external Windows drives.

Windows 11 does not support Mac by default as Mac does not have TPM 2.0 chip and secure boot. These are two important Windows 11 system requirements.
However, you can install Windows 10 on your Mac first. Then upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 with a command line trick.
How to install Windows 11 on Mac
1. Go to Microsoft’s official download page and get the Windows 11 ISO (x64).
2. Right-click the ISO → Mount, which gives you a virtual DVD drive (for example, D:).
3. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the setup command with the “product server” flag
D:\setup.exe /product serverReplace D: with the correct letter for your mounted ISO.
4. Choose Keep personal files and apps when asked. Windows 11 setup will run without showing any “This PC can’t run Windows 11” errors.
5. You can rerun the Boot Camp Support Software installer from Apple or use the Brigadier utility to fetch the right driver set.
6. Reboot once drivers are installed.
P.S. This only works for Intel Macs.

Boot Camp is one of the best ways to help you install Windows 11 on Mac. It does support Windows 11 on Intel-based Macs, but not officially on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, or M3) models.
On Intel Macs, you can use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 11 much like Windows 10 — just ensure Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements are bypassed or emulated, since Macs don’t have a physical TPM chip. Many users have successfully installed Windows 11 using modified ISOs to remove these checks.
However, Boot Camp is not available on Apple Silicon Macs, as these machines use a different architecture. If you’re on an M-series Mac, your best option is to use virtualization software to run Windows 11 ARM edition. These apps let you install and run Windows 11 smoothly on Mac without rebooting.
