How to split PDF to separate PDF files in Windows 11?

On Windows 11, you can split a PDF into separate PDF files either by extracting pages manually with Microsoft Edge or by using the Microsoft virtual printer. The same basic approaches work on Windows 10.
A PDF splitter creates separate files from one document, such as one PDF for every page or one PDF for each chosen range. That is different from splitting a single PDF page in half.
Split PDF pages without using Adobe Acrobat
Microsoft Edge can save selected pages as a new PDF through the built-in Microsoft Print to PDF virtual printer. It is not a true PDF splitter. You must repeat the process for each separate PDF.
1. Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge.
2. Press Ctrl + P.
3. Choose Microsoft Print to PDF.
4. Enter the page number, page range, or individual pages to extract. For example, use 1 to save page 1, 2-4 to save pages 2 through 4, or 1,3,6 for selected pages.
5. Select Print, then choose a filename and save location.
6. Repeat for each separate PDF file you need.
This is a free option for occasional extraction, including a two-page PDF that needs to become two files. It is not ideal for a large document because each output file must be saved separately. Printed PDFs can also lose bookmarks, links, forms, comments, accessibility data, and digital signatures. For true PDF splitting, use PDFgear or Adobe Acrobat Pro to create one file per page or split fixed-range pages.
Split every page into an individual PDF for free
PDFgear is a free desktop option for Windows when you want to split a PDF into single pages, page ranges, or multiple output files in one operation.
1. Open the PDF in PDFgear.
2. Go to the Tools tab and find the Split PDF button.
3. Choose whether to create one PDF per page or split at specified page ranges.
4. Select an output folder.
5. Click Split.
6. Check the created PDFs and confirm that the pages are in the intended order.
This is generally the simplest free desktop app for a multi-page PDF. It is also preferable for confidential documents because the work stays in a local application rather than requiring an online upload.
Use Adobe Acrobat Pro for advanced split rules
Adobe Acrobat Pro is the paid professional choice when you need to split by a fixed number of pages, maximum file size, or top-level bookmarks.
1. Open the document in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
2. Select All tools > Organize pages.
3. Select Split.
4. Choose pages, file size, or bookmarks as the split criterion.
5. Set output options.
6. Click Split to create the separate PDF files.
Adobe’s online split tool can be convenient for non-sensitive documents, but use a local desktop workflow for contracts, IDs, financial statements, or other confidential files.
If spliting is blocked, the PDF may have a permissions password. You need authorization and the appropriate password before you can extract or split its pages.
