How to read PDFs aloud on iPhone for free
If you mainly want to listen to individual paragraphs, Speak Selection may be more convenient than having the entire screen read aloud. Adobe’s iPhone PDF guide describes this approach, and Apple documents the same feature.
1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak, or Spoken Content on older versions.
2. Turn on Speak Selection.
3. Open the PDF and select the paragraph you want to hear.
4. Tap Speak in the text-selection menu.
This is useful for checking a difficult passage or listening to a short section without starting narration elsewhere on the screen. However, it requires selectable text and is not an automatic whole-document listening workflow.
If the selection jumps between columns or includes unrelated text, try a smaller passage first. That can help distinguish a text-selection problem from a speech-setting problem.
Here is Adobe’s iPhone PDF guide, including its read-aloud instructions.
