How to read PDFs aloud on iPhone for free
You can read a PDF aloud on an iPhone for free using Apple’s built-in Speak Screen feature. You don’t need to enable VoiceOver or install another app just to try it.
1. Open Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak. On older iOS versions, look for Spoken Content.
2. Enable Speak Screen. You can also enable Show Controller to keep the playback controls available.
3. Open your PDF in Files or your usual PDF reader.
4. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen, then use the controls to pause, change the speaking rate, or move through the content.
The important limitation is that Speak Screen reads text exposed by the app. It is worth testing a page transition before relying on it for a long document. If it reads interface controls instead of the PDF, check whether you can select text within the file.
Apple explains the gestures and settings in its official spoken-text guide.
