How to partition a hard drive in Windows 11 without losing data?
- Aug 14, 2025
I recently used Dr.Partition to partition my hard drive in Windows 11 without losing any data. It’s simple, reliable, and worked perfectly, but make sure to back up important files just in case before starting.

It’s easy for beginners too!
Windows Disk Management does provide partition/volume shrink function but will only allow you to shrink the volume down to the size of the highest allocated cluster which may not be small enough for you. Once you've shrunk the main partition/volume it will leave space after it where you should be able to create a new partition and format it as you like I advise against buying 3rd party partitioning tools especially commercial Dr. Partition which seems to be promoted as a solution to things it cannot do in other threads, when there is no need.
