How to find out what's taking up space on a C drive in windows 11?
Using WinDirStat is a great way to analyze disk usage and identify space-hogging files on Windows quickly and efficiently. It essentially turns your drive’s storage data into a visual treemap and detailed file list, allowing you to pinpoint exactly which files and folders are consuming the most space and helping you find out what is taking so much space on my C: drive.
Tutorial: Download and launch the software, then select the C: drive to initiate a comprehensive scan. It will first calculate the size of each file and folder, subsequently displaying the results in two sections: a folder list sorted by size on the left, and a colour-coded tree diagram on the right—where larger colour blocks represent larger files. Clicking a block in the tree view or a list item takes you directly to the file's location. Right-clicking any unwanted item allows you to delete it or move it to another drive. This visual approach provides an intuitive overview of file distribution, enabling you to clearly find out what is taking so much space on my C: drive without repeatedly searching through folders.
It excels at uncovering hidden large files, old backups, or forgotten downloads—exactly the kind of items routinely overlooked by standard cleaning tools. Prior to storage upgrades, it also provides an effective audit of disk usage.
