How to Convert Text to Speech on Phones?

I often have longer text that I would rather listen to than read on screen, including pasted text, articles, notes, and study material. I need a solution that works on Android or iPhone and is simple enough to use regularly.

The most useful features for me would be clear, natural-sounding voices, adjustable playback speed, and an easy way to add text without going through a complicated setup. I am mainly interested in basic mobile text-to-speech reading, rather than a large set of premium productivity tools.

Do you know any free methods or free text-to-speech apps that work well on phones?

You can convert text to speech for free on a phone in two ways: use the built-in accessibility reader on an iPhone or Android for on-screen text, or use a dedicated TTS app when you need to work with files, scans, web links, or exported audio.

How to convert text to speech for free on a phone

    1. Open SayTXT on your iPhone or Android phone.

    2. Paste text, add a file or scan, or enter the link to a webpage.

    3. Select a language and voice.

    4. Start listening to the text.

    5. Add content to a playlist when you want to queue several documents, articles, or study materials.

SayTXT is fully free and has no usage limits. It supports multiple languages and voices, and it can export speech as an audio file. That makes it a more flexible choice than a built-in phone reader when you want to listen to different types of content or keep the generated audio for later.

Free text to speech on iPhone without another tool

    1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak.

    2. Enable Speak Selection or Speak Screen.

    3. Choose a voice, language, and speaking rate.

    4. Highlight text and tap Speak, or swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen.

Free text to speech on Android like Google Pixel without another tool

    1. On your Google Pixel, open Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak.

    2. Turn on the Select to Speak shortcut and choose the shortcut method you prefer.

    3. Open the article, email, or other on-screen text you want to hear.

    4. Activate the Select to Speak shortcut, then tap a text item or drag over the section to have it read aloud.

    5. To change the language, voice, or speech rate, go to Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output.

The iPhone and Android accessibility features are convenient for short, selectable text already on screen. SayTXT is the stronger free option when you want to listen to different content types, including files, scans, and links, or when you need a playlist and more language and voice choices.
