How to Clone Windows 11 to SSD free with larger storage space?
- Sep 24, 2024
Cloning Windows OS to new SSD without data loss is a very challenging task. Unfortunately, there is no official feature available on Windows 11 for doing this. I have spent three ways to finally find out a working way to do this. If you want to do this safely and comfortably, please follow the step in this guide:

P.S. It only took me one hour to fully complete the migration (1TB data to new SSD), which is quite impressive!
What You'll Need
1. A USB-to-NVMe adapter (to connect your new SSD to the laptop).
Not sure which one to buy? Brands like Sabrent or StarTech are affordable (~$15 on Amazon).
2. Data backup (just in case—use Windows’ built-in File History for a quick backup).
Step 1: Use Macrium Reflect Free (Trusted & No Bloatware)
✅ Why this tool?
It’s free, supports U.S. English natively, and automatically adjusts partitions to fit larger drives—no technical skills needed.
1. Download and install Macrium Reflect Free.
2. Connect your new SSD via the USB adapter.
3. Open Macrium, select your current Windows 11 SSD (128GB), then click "Clone This Disk".
Step 2: Configure the Clone
1. Under Destination, select your new NVMe SSD.
⚠️ Critical! Check “Copy partitions” and ensure the new drive’s partition is expanded to fill the extra space.
(Macrium usually does this automatically, but double-check!)
2. Click Finish → OK to start cloning.
Step 3: Swap the SSD & Boot
1. Once cloning completes, shut down your laptop.
2. Physically replace the old SSD with the new one.
🔧 Unsure how? Check YouTube for your laptop model + "SSD replacement" - most U.S. manufacturers like Dell/HP have easy guides.
3. Power on the laptop - it should boot directly to Windows 11 with all files/apps intact.
Troubleshooting Tips
If the system doesn’t boot:
Enter BIOS (tap F2/DEL during startup) and set the new SSD as the primary boot device.
Still issues? Use Windows Startup Repair (hold Shift while clicking Restart).
Just an FYI Macrium reflect free is no longer free (hasn't been since Jan '24 apparently!)
