Auto-Empty Trash - Most users manually empty their Trash, but macOS has a hidden setting that automatically deletes items after 30 days . This is completely free and requires no software.
How to enable it:
- Open Finder (the blue smiley face icon in your Dock)
- Click Finder in the top menu bar, then select Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions)
- Click the Advanced tab at the top of the Settings window
- Check the box next to "Remove items from the Trash after 30 days"
Once enabled, any file you send to the Trash will be permanently deleted 30 days later. This is particularly useful for you to clear hard drive space on MacBook AIR without manual intervention—files you forgot about simply disappear after a month.
The Auto-Empty Trash feature helps you clear hard drive space on MacBook Air in several important ways:
- Continuous background cleanup – Instead of remembering to empty the Trash manually, the system does it automatically every 30 days. This prevents the Trash from slowly accumulating gigabytes of forgotten files over months or years.
- Handles the "out of sight, out of mind" problem – Most users stop thinking about files once they're in the Trash. Those files continue taking up space indefinitely. Auto-Empty Trash ensures they don't stay there forever.
