How to backup ipad to pc without itunes on Windows 11
Trying to back up my iPad to my Windows 11 PC but want to avoid iTunes specifically. The iTunes app is so buggy!
What I want: A full backup of my iPad (or at minimum, my photos, notes, and app data) saved locally on my PC, without going through iTunes.
Does Apple's newer Apple Devices app on Windows 11 handle backups the same way iTunes did, or is it different? Is there any better way to backup iPad to PC?

iCopyGo is a nice option for users who want a simpler way to back up and transfer iPad data to a PC without relying on iTunes. It can backup the selected data such as photos, videos, messages, contacts, and other files to a computer.
The selective backup approach is especially useful when you don't want to create a complete iTunes backup every time. You can preview the available data, choose what you need, and save it locally on your PC.
For beginners, iCopyGo is an appealing iPad backup software for PC because the workflow is straightforward: connect the iPad with a USB cable, let the app scan the device, select the data, and backup iPad data to the computer without iTunes on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Backing up an iPad locally without iTunes is possible, but the command-line method requires the correct device utilities on Windows first. libimobiledevice includes idevicebackup2, which is specifically designed to create and restore iOS and iPadOS backups. For anyone who wants to backup iPad to Windows 11 pc, this utility can save the backup data to a local folder on the computer.
The Windows package needs to include idevicebackup2.exe and the libraries required for communication with the iPad. Once these files are prepared and the iPad trusts the computer, idevicebackup2 can be used to backup iPad to Windows 11 pc without opening iTunes. Windows binary distributions of these tools are available, although they are separate from the main source-code repository.
How to use libimobiledevice
Op. 1: Download a Windows build that includes idevicebackup2.exe, then extract the ZIP file to a permanent folder, such as C:\libimobiledevice. Keep the included DLL files in the same folder because the executable depends on them.
Op. 2: Connect the iPad to the PC with a USB cable. Unlock the iPad and tap Trust when Trust This Computer appears, then enter the iPad passcode.
Op. 3: Create a separate folder for the backup, for example C:\iPadBackup. Make sure the PC has enough free storage for the device data you want to back up.
Op. 4: Open the extracted program folder, click the File Explorer address bar, type powershell, and press Enter. This opens PowerShell directly in the folder containing the required executable.
Op. 5: Keep the iPad unlocked and connected to the PC. In the PowerShell window opened from the program folder, enter the following command and press Enter:
.\idevicebackup2.exe backup --full "C:\iPadBackup"
This command creates a full device backup and saves the backup data in C:\iPadBackup. Keep the iPad connected until the process is complete.
Op. 6: Leave the USB cable connected until the process finishes. After completion, keep the entire backup directory together rather than moving or editing individual files inside it.

The Windows Photos app offers a free, built-in way to back up your iPad's photos and videos to a PC without using iTunes. When you connect your iPad via USB, Windows recognizes it as a camera device, and the Photos app can scan its camera roll (DCIM folder) and backup iPad to PC on Windows 11/10.
This is a fast, no-frills option specifically for media, even though it doesn't back up app data, messages, or settings the way a full backup tool would.
How to backup iPad to computer on Windows 11
1. Use a Lightning-to-USB or USB-C cable to connect it to your Windows PC.
2. A prompt will appear on your iPad asking you to "Trust This Computer." Tap Trust and enter your passcode if prompted without this, Windows won't be able to access the device's photos.
3. On your PC, click the Start menu and open the Photos app.
4. In the Photos app, look for an Import option (usually in the top menu or under a "From a connected device" section). Select your iPad from the list of available devices.
5. Photos will scan your iPad's camera roll and display thumbnails of all photos and videos found. You can select all, or manually check only the items you want to bring over.
6. Click Import (or "Import selected") and choose a destination folder on your PC. The app will copy the files over. The speed depends on how many photos/videos you're transferring and your USB connection.

Transferring important iPad content to a PC without relying on iTunes can be handled through a direct local file transfer. PairDrop can be used for backup iPad to Windows 11 pc by sending photos, videos, documents, and other accessible files from the iPad directly to the computer through a web browser.
Open PairDrop on both devices while they are connected to the same local network. On the iPad, select the PC, choose the files you want to save, and start the transfer. The PC can then receive and store those files locally. For backup iPad to Windows 11 pc, you can repeat the process for different folders and file types to keep copies of important iPad content on the computer.
Pros:
- Transfers multiple files
- No iTunes required
- Works through a web browser
Cons:
- Requires manual file selection
- Large transfers can take time
- Transfer speed depends on the local network

When iTunes becomes unreliable for transferring files, keeping important iPad content directly on a Windows PC can be a useful alternative. To backup iPad to PC without iTunes for photos, videos, and documents, LocalSend can transfer these files between the two devices over the same local network without creating a full device backup.
How to backup iPad to PC without iTunes using LocalSend
Step 1: Install LocalSend on both the iPad and Windows 11 PC, then make sure both devices are connected to the same local network.
Step 2: Open the app on both devices and grant access to the local network, photos, or files when requested.
Step 3: On the iPad, select the photos, videos, or documents you want to copy and choose the Windows PC as the receiving device.
Step 4: Accept the transfer on the PC and select a folder for the received files.
Step 5: Wait for the transfer to finish, then open the destination folder and check that the files were copied correctly.
This method works well for keeping local copies of accessible files, but it does not create a full iPad backup containing app data, device settings, or other protected information. Keep the original files on the iPad until you have verified that the transferred copies open correctly.

A full local iPad backup is different from simply copying photos or documents to a computer. Apple's newer Apple Devices app can create local backups on Windows and largely replaces the device-management functions previously handled by iTunes. This provides a practical starting point when you want to backup iPad to PC without iTunes.
OpenExtract is an open-source utility for accessing data stored in existing iPhone and iPad backups. First, connect the iPad to the PC with a USB cable and use Apple Devices to create a local backup. Once the backup is complete, open it with this utility and browse the available content. You can then extract supported data, such as photos, notes, messages, contacts, and certain app files, to a separate folder on the PC.
Keep in mind that this utility reads existing backups rather than creating a complete iPad backup itself. For a dependable way to backup iPad to PC without iTunes, use Apple Devices to create the local backup and then use the extraction tool when you need to browse or recover specific data from that backup.

iCloud Backup, Apple's built-in backup solution for iOS and iPadOS devices. The entire process happens wirelessly over Wi-Fi directly to Apple's servers. This is an alternative solution if you don't want to backup iPad to PC without iTunes on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Once enabled in Settings, it automatically backs up your device daily whenever it's connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi, capturing app data, device settings, photos and videos, messages, ringtones, and health data. You can also trigger a manual backup at any time with a single tap, making it the simplest option for people who just want protection without thinking about it further.
Pros
- Fully automatic once enabled — backs up daily with no manual steps required
- No computer, cable, or third-party software needed at all
- Accessible from anywhere — you can restore to a new device just by signing into iCloud, even without your old device in hand
Cons
- Only 5GB of free storage — most users with photos, videos, or many apps will exceed this quickly and need a paid iCloud+ plan
- Requires a stable Wi-Fi connection — backups won't run (or will be very slow) on cellular data or spotty networks
- Restoring a large backup over the internet can take significantly longer than restoring from a local backup on a PC or external drive
