How long does it take to update to Windows 11?

I am trying to determine how long a typical Windows 11 update takes to complete, as my system has been stuck on the installation screen for several hours and I am unsure if this is normal behavior. I understand that update duration depends on various factors like hardware specifications, internet speed, and the size of the update itself, but I would appreciate some general guidance on expected timeframes and when I should consider the update to be truly stuck versus simply taking longer than usual. My main concern is whether I should wait it out or risk interrupting the process, which could potentially lead to system corruption or boot failure. If anyone has recent experience with Windows 11 update times, especially on mid-range hardware, please share your insights and any warning signs that indicate an update

Give the update more time, especially if your hardware is mid-range or the update is large. Sometimes updates can take several hours to complete.

  • Hi, the best first step is to see what is actually growing instead of deleting random files. Use Settings > System > Storage, then run TreeSize or WinDirStat as administrator for a clearer view. Common causes are OneDrive offline files, Windows.old, Delivery Optimization cache, restore points, hibernation, temp folders, and large app caches.
