    Windows does not need to know every possible hardware combination. It works by using common hardware standards and separate drivers for each device.

    When Windows starts or a new device is connected:

    1. The device reports an identification number to Windows.
    2. Windows looks for a matching driver already installed on the computer.
    3. If none is found, Windows checks Windows Update.
    4. If there is still no driver, the user may need to install one from the device manufacturer.

    Common devices such as keyboards, mice and USB drives normally follow standard rules, so Windows can use a built-in driver. More complicated devices, such as graphics cards, need drivers from Intel, AMD or NVIDIA.

    If a new device is not supported, it may work with limited features, appear as an Unknown device in Device Manager, or not work at all. If the missing driver is for an important part such as the storage controller, Windows Setup may not even detect the drive.

    So Windows handles billions of hardware combinations by using shared standards and interchangeable drivers, rather than having special code for every possible computer.
