How do you edit a pdf document on mac
Hi everyone,
Long-time Windows 11 user here, just made the switch to Mac and loving it so far but I'm stumped on something basic. On Windows I used Adobe Acrobat / the built-in Edge browser to edit PDFs pretty easily. On Mac, I can open PDFs fine in Preview, but I can't figure out how to do things like:
• Edit or replace existing text
• Add/remove pages
• Fill out and sign forms
• Add annotations or comments
Do I need a separate pdf editing app? Would love a free or built-in solution edit a pdf document on mac, but open to paid options too if that's the norm on Mac.
Thanks in advance

Preview is a default pre-installed Mac application that lets users edit pdf on mac without adobe. It covers daily basic PDF markup and page management without extra paid software installation.
How to Edit PDF on Mac Without Adobe
Step 1: Launch Preview and open the target PDF file.
Step 2: Click the circular pencil annotation icon.
Step 3: Go to View → Show Annotation Toolbar to open the editing tools.
Step 4: Use the appropriate options to add text, highlights, shapes, and signatures.
Step 5: Enable page thumbnails via View → Thumbnails (shortcut: Cmd+Alt+2).
Step 6: Use the Delete key to remove pages, drag a PDF or image into the document to insert a new page, and drag thumbnails to reorder pages
The software comes with built-in tools that allow you to efficiently make simple edits to individual PDF files, making it ideal for everyday tasks such as annotating PDFs and organizing pages.
Cons
- Supports only basic editing; lacks advanced features such as merging and splitting PDFs and format conversion.
