How do I quickly find and delete duplicate photos on my iPhone?
My iPhone photo library is now a full mess after years of camera photos, screenshots and shared images. The storage space is almost full, and many photos look like exact duplicates or very similar copies.
The challenge is that checking thousands of photos one by one on the iPhone takes too much time. I plan to scan the DCIM folder after connecting the iPhone to my Windows 11 PC so I can quickly find and delete duplicate photos on iPhone.
Is this possible? If yes, what is the best way to do that now? There are over 2000 photos saved on my iPhone gallery app.

You can use iCloud Photos on Windows to delete duplicate photos on iPhone 17 Pro Max. But there's a catch: Windows doesn't have the fancy "Duplicates" album that your iPhone has . The Windows version of iCloud is essentially a syncing tool, not a duplicate-finding tool. So you'll need to do a bit of manual work—or use a free duplicate finder alongside it.
When you install iCloud for Windows and enable iCloud Photos, your entire iCloud photo library syncs to a folder on your PC. You can access it through File Explorer, just like any other folder.
- On iPhone 17 Pro Max: The Photos app has a built-in "Duplicates" album that automatically finds and groups identical photos . You can merge them with one tap.
- On Windows PC: No Duplicates album. But once your photos are synced to your PC, you can browse, sort, and delete photos manually.
The key difference? When you delete a photo from the iCloud Photos folder on your Windows PC, that deletion syncs back to iCloud and deletes the photo from all your devices—including your iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Since you have an iPhone 17 Pro Max, the easiest path is actually to skip Windows entirely for the duplicate detection part:
1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone
2. Scroll all the way down to the bottom
3. Look for Utilities → Duplicates
4. Tap Merge next to each group (iOS keeps the highest-quality version and deletes the rest)
Using iCloud Photos on Windows to delete duplicate photos on iPhone 17 Pro Max is absolutely possible.

Let's be honest with each other. Using Windows Explorer + Manual Sorting is technically a free method for how to delete duplicate photos on iPhone.
So you'd have to copy everything to your PC first. Once the photos are safely on your hard drive, here's how to delete duplicate photos on iPhone:
1. Open the folder in Windows Explorer
2. Switch to Large Icons or Extra Large Icons view so you can actually see what each photo looks like
3. Sort by Date Taken or Date Modified to group similar photos together
4. Scroll through hundreds or thousands of photos, one by one
5. Manually spot the duplicates – "Oh, that's the same photo of my cat, but one has slightly brighter lighting"
6. Select the copy you want to delete (Ctrl+click to pick multiple files)
7. Move them to the Recycle Bin
8. Repeat for every set of duplicates
This works if you have maybe 20-30 photos. But if your iPhone has been collecting years of camera photos, screenshots, and shared images like you mentioned, manual sorting is going to take hours.

Shortcuts is a native iPhone app that lets you delete delete duplicate photos on iphone 15 and filter out potentially redundant images.
Instructions: Open the built-in Shortcuts app on your iPhone, tap the + button to create a new shortcut, search for and add the Find Photos action, configure the filter rules: Location → Name → Contains, add a filter by file size to sort out potential duplicates, and finally add Show Results to display the matched photos.
Its advantages include: photo analysis runs entirely on the iPhone to protect image privacy; flexible and customizable filtering parameters to meet a variety of duplicate removal needs.
Its disadvantages include: it cannot automatically identify identical images; after the results are displayed, users must manually compare and clean up the photos.
This allows you to filter out locally duplicated photos, enabling you to permanently delete duplicate photos on iphone 15.
It’s ideal for users who prefer native iOS solutions for occasional photo cleanup, as well as those who prefer not to install third-party cleaning apps.

GeeTee is an open-source command-line tool that can find duplicate files. Since it lacks a graphical user interface, it is primarily suited for users who are familiar with terminal commands and want to learn how to delete duplicate photos on iphone through a quick local scan.
To use the software, you need to download the executable file and run a command pointing to the iPhone’s DCIM folder, while setting the similarity threshold and specifying the output file.
Run:
geetee.exe -scan “This PC\Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM” -similarity 90 -output duplicates.txt
This will quickly generate a text list containing nearly identical images.
Since the software does not support a visual preview feature, you must manually inspect the output files and delete any unwanted photos directly on the device. Although it is fast, the lack of a graphical user interface makes this method of how to delete duplicate photos on iphone somewhat technically challenging; it is best suited for advanced users who prefer command-line tools over traditional photo management software.

iOS 16 and later versions come with a built-in Photos app that can delete duplicate photos on iphone 15, but this feature can only identify exact duplicates and cannot distinguish between similar photos.
Although it supports batch merging of redundant photos, it cannot remove photos with subtle differences in composition.
First, open the Photos app on your iPhone, tap the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen, and then scroll down to find the Utilities section.
Tap the Duplicates album, select the identical photos that have been grouped, then tap the Merge button next to each group, or tap Merge All at the top; the system will automatically keep the highest-quality original photo and delete the extra copies, thereby removing delete duplicate photos on iphone 15.
Once the merging is complete, be sure to check your main photo library to confirm the results.
It cannot identify visually similar photos with slight differences in resolution or detail, so it’s only suitable for removing exact duplicates.
If you don’t want to install a third-party cleanup app, you can try this method. Since this is a native solution, be sure to carefully back up your important photos beforehand.
