How do I completely uninstall an app on Windows 11 that hard to delete?
The Control Panel remains a reliable, "old-school" method for managing software in Windows 11, often providing a more granular view than the modern Settings app. While Microsoft has been moving many features to the new interface, the Programs and Features section within the Control Panel is still the go-to environment for removing traditional desktop applications (.exe or .msi files). It is particularly useful because it often triggers the software's dedicated uninstaller, which is specifically designed by the developer to scrub the program from your directories.
However, it is important to note that the Control Panel has limitations. It generally cannot see or uninstall "Modern" apps (UWP) downloaded from the Microsoft Store, such as Calculator or Instagram. Furthermore, while the Control Panel removes the main application files, it may leave behind empty folders in your AppData or orphaned entries in the Windows Registry. To ensure a truly "complete" uninstallation, you might still need to manually delete leftover folders in your user directory after the Control Panel process finishes.
How to completely uninstall an app on Windows 11
Step 1: Press the Win key, type "Control Panel," and hit Enter.
Step 2: Under the Programs category, click on the blue link that says Uninstall a program. (If your view is set to "Icons," look for Programs and Features).
Step 3: Scroll through the list or use the search bar at the top right to find the specific software you wish to remove.
Step 4: Right-click the application and select Uninstall, or select the app and click the Uninstall button that appears on the top toolbar.
Step 5: A separate window (the software's own uninstaller) will likely open. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the removal.
Restart (Optional): If the program was large or integrated into the system, restart your PC to clear out any remaining temporary files or background processes.
