How can I edit a pdf document on a mac for free?
On a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or another Mac, Preview can annotate a PDF with notes, highlights. To modify or delete original text or replace existing images, use a desktop PDF editor such as PDFgear or Adobe Acrobat Pro. Preview and browser-based editors remain useful for annotations, but they do not provide the same control over existing PDF content.
Before choosing a method, distinguish annotation from true PDF editing. Annotation adds highlights, comments, drawings, signatures, or text boxes over the page without changing its underlying text or images. True editing directly modifies or deletes the original content stored in the PDF.
Use Preview for notes and simple markup
Preview is built into macOS and is sufficient when you only need to add notes, highlights, drawings, or new text boxes.
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Click the Show Markup Toolbar button.
- Select Text, Note, Highlight, or another markup tool.
- Add and position the annotation.
- Save a copy of the PDF.
Preview cannot reliably modify or delete existing PDF text, replace original images, or reflow paragraphs. A white shape placed over unwanted text only hides it visually; it does not remove the underlying content. To change the PDF's original text or images directly, use a dedicated PDF editor.
Edit a PDF online for free with PDFgear
PDFgear Online Editor works in a browser without an account, subscription, or watermark. It can add text boxes, images, comments, notes, highlights, shapes, and drawings. Files are processed locally in the browser instead of being uploaded to a server.
- Open the PDFgear Online PDF Editor.
- Click Select PDF File and choose the document.
- Use the toolbar to add text boxes, images, comments, or notes.
- Position and format the new content as needed.
- Click Download PDF to save the edited file.
The online editor is suitable for adding new content, but it does not support directly changing or deleting existing PDF text. Use the offline PDFgear Mac app when the original wording must be modified.
Edit existing PDF text for free with PDFgear for Mac
PDFgear for Mac is a free PDF editor that does not require an account or sign-in. It can modify or delete existing text, insert or replace images, and handle common markup tasks such as highlighting, drawing, and adding notes. Core editing takes place locally and can be used offline.
- Open the PDF in the PDFgear desktop app.
- Go to Edit and select Edit Text.
- Click a text block to change text in an existing PDF or delete it.
- Use Add Image to insert a picture, or use the annotation tools to add a note.
- Save the edited document under a new name.
Because PDFgear edits PDF objects instead of converting the entire document to Word, the unchanged pages should retain their original appearance. For a scanned PDF, PDFgear can use OCR to make recognized text searchable and copyable, or convert a PDF to an editable document in Word or TXT for more extensive changes.
Use Adobe Acrobat Pro for professional PDF editing
Adobe Acrobat Pro is the paid option for editing complex PDF documents on a Mac. It can modify existing text, add or replace images, and create comments within the same document. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader supports comments and basic annotations, but it does not provide the full Edit a PDF tools.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Open the Edit section from the toolbar on the left.
- Select the text, image, or object you want to modify.
- For scanned pages, run Scan & OCR > Recognize Text before making changes.
- Select Save As and save the edited PDF under a new name.
Acrobat Pro is useful for documents containing complicated layouts or embedded fonts, but even professional software cannot guarantee that every PDF will edit like a Word document. The original font, text encoding, and way the PDF was created all affect the result.
If you cannot select the original text, the document may be a scanned or flattened PDF. Run OCR before attempting to edit it, then proofread names, numbers, and formatting carefully.
