HEIF/HEIC only opening on some Windows PCs
Hi, I have pictures from an iPhone 15 that I'm now trying to view on a Windows PC. The pictures have the HEIC extension.
When trying to open these pictures on a Windows PC I get mixed results. When it doesn't work I get the message that I need to buy and install the HEVC-extension, but that doesn't explain why it is working on some machines, because the HEVC-extension is not installed on any of these PCs. All PCs do have the HEIF-extension installed.
If I understand it correctly, HEIC is the same as HEIF except that HEIC is the name that Apple uses for its version of HEIF. This would mean that the HEIF-extension should be enough and that the HEVC-extension shouldn't be required at all (also because HEVC is for video, "High Efficiency Video Coding").

For convenience, just convert the heic images to jpg.

Some photos might be encoded with HEIC using different compression or features that require additional codecs.

Some HEIC images, especially from newer iPhones like the 15, may use advanced features that require additional codecs or components. While HEVC (video codec) isn't strictly necessary for images, certain HEIC images may be encoded with features that depend on HEVC decoding capabilities.
