Fan suddenly becomes extremely loud

My laptop fan suddenly starts spinning at maximum speed and becomes extremely loud, even when the system is idle and CPU usage is low. This happens randomly and continues for several minutes before returning to normal, and I have already checked for dust buildup and background processes.
