Bitlocker endless loop
I sent my new HP desktop in to the HP repair center in Texas for some repairs. I received it back on Monday, July 27. Before it left the repair center, they put a Bitcover lock on it. The result was that when I tried to boot it up, I got a screen saying that I had to insert the Bitlocker ‘recovery key’ to boot the computer up. It transpired that I had to use a different device to find this key. Once I was on the different device, I was supposed to sign in to my Microsoft account, find the device in question, and click on a link titled ‘Manage Recovery Keys.’
I don’t have a different device—smartphone, laptop, etc.—so I went to a library about 15 miles away (in a different state) to try to get this recovery key on one of their computers. The computer guy there helped me get into my Microsoft account. We found the HP Desktop and clicked on ‘See Details.’ What popped up included a heading, ‘Bitlocker Data Protection’ and a link to ‘Manage Recovery Keys.’ I clicked on that. What came up put me into an endless loop that was constantly trying to ‘process authentication’ or trying to sign me in. This loop had the URL:
https://account.microsoft.com/auth/complete-client-signin-oauth-silent?state=H4sIAAAAAAAEAA3O24JCQAAA0H_p1YNcM4-MJiHRaMWbO4UZDdvo63fPF5wdetcH8yzXOCwg6DSmteLyyMQjruDwTeCMQWk_JyXqA47EnlbGlC2-kaJqEkKrz9EzPvZEcki9sukO0Hc9KpNELpKaB2jW9s2WxED4eK2eDxtr9VMpuRRpzuNaft7hFefjRzdZ-sD8imyLGPR4iJfNl_eDcqrvh8Zt50wTB81KXVtM3d5ta6NX5VvezEoH9HH1iCHN7HyyO6iy8GbcNhxbbIGuEWU5n-rfe5E0IXm9lXSz6fmrXkfo-72Qxs_HQEXzKYVhJ9fbqr6sHzMgK7QgiguOBAfz_9SLYrqyjXKJ1ZFgBUUgY0qAbiegjC7qjUdaQQuFuMVHbaZRmX9lFAeePWt-13O-mgBf0Bjmlwh1iYqxt8SpC7wqEnwnghLe_QEgFFpDggEAAA
The computer guy couldn’t figure it out. The only thing he could think of was that it might have something to do with our location there. He suggested I go home and hook up my old Windows 10 Lenovo and try it again; so I did that. But I get the same result. I can get into my Microsoft account, but when I click on ‘Manage Recovery Keys,’ I get into this same endless loop.
So I’ve tried this at two different locations with two different computers, and it doesn’t work. The problem isn’t with the computers, it’s with Microsoft. I need this glitch fixed. Otherwise, I won’t be able to use my new computer.
