Here are the essential things to know when adding text to video:
Readability First
- Use high contrast between text and background (light text on dark areas, or add a subtle drop shadow/outline)
- Keep font sizes large enough for mobile viewers—many people watch on small screens
- Sans-serif fonts (like Arial, Helvetica, Montserrat) generally work better on screen than serif fonts
- Avoid placing text in the lower 10-15% of the frame where subtitles/captions usually appear
Timing & Duration
- Text should stay on screen long enough to be read twice—about 3 seconds for short phrases, longer for sentences
- Use simple fade-ins/outs or slide animations; flashy text effects distract from the message
- If text appears while someone is speaking, sync it with natural pauses
Placement & Safe Zones
- Keep text within the "safe area" (about 90% of the frame) to avoid being cut off on different displays
- Center alignment works for titles; left-alignment works better for longer text blocks
- Avoid covering important visual elements or faces
