Any Chance of getting any data back by myself?

I had a old hard drive out of pc unplugged sitting in storage for years. I booted up recently to see what was in it, and to my surprise, it had a lot of photos i wanted to backup i was browsing through the hard drive, and it suddenly froze, and then disconnected.

Now I can't get it to show up on Windows 11 at all.

Just want to know if there is any way to gain access back to the hard drive and salvage as much as i can.

Any help is appreciated

    Hi RowenHr,

There may still be a chance to recover some or even most of the data, depending on what failed.

    A few questions:

    • Does the drive spin up or make any unusual clicking, grinding, or beeping sounds when connected?
    • Does it appear in Disk Management, even if it doesn't show up in File Explorer?
    • Are you connecting it internally, through a USB adapter, or through an external enclosure?

The fact that you were able to browse the files before it froze suggests the drive was at least partially readable at that point. Sometimes a failing drive can disconnect when it encounters unreadable sectors or develops a hardware issue.

If the photos are important, I would avoid repeatedly powering the drive on and off for now. Every additional attempt can sometimes make recovery more difficult if the drive is failing.

If Windows still detects the drive in Disk Management, there may be recovery options available. If it is no longer detected anywhere, the issue could be more serious and may require specialized recovery tools or services.

Can you let us know whether the drive appears in Disk Management and whether you hear any unusual sounds from it?
