Windows suddenly asks which app should open a file it opened normally yesterday

Yesterday Windows opened one of my files normally with the usual app, but today it suddenly asks me to choose which app should open it, even though nothing changed on my end. I need help understanding why the file association broke overnight and how to restore the default app permanently.
