Task Manager’s 100% disk figure is active time, not storage capacity, so a drive can show 100% while transferring data. During a slowdown, open Resource Monitor > Disk and sort by Total bytes per second and Response Time; note the accessed files. Check Settings > System > Storage > Disks and volumes for a health warning, and review the System event log for Disk, StorAHCI, NVMe, or file-system errors at the same UTC time. Ensure adequate free space, then install storage-controller, chipset, drive-firmware, and Windows updates. If the spike is intermittent, capture it with Windows Performance Recorder using a disk I/O profile instead of guessing from a screenshot. A clean boot can identify third-party backup, antivirus, or synchronization software. Do not disable SysMain or Windows Search blindly. If active time stays high with low throughput, long latency, or hardware warnings, back up immediately and run the drive manufacturer’s diagnostics.
