This is the #1 culprit. If a folder contains many images, videos, or documents, Explorer tries to generate preview thumbnails. If the thumbnail cache is corrupted, or a specific media file is damaged or has an invalid header, Explorer can get stuck indefinitely while trying to render the preview.
