Windows 10/11 disk cleaner software for freeing up more space
My C drive has been showing red for weeks now, and I'm down to less than 20GB free on a 256GB SSD. The problem is, I've already run the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup a few times, but it barely made a dent. It feels like I'm just scratching the surface.
I know there are tons of third-party disk cleaner software out there. But I've also heard horror stories about some of them being full of ads, bundled with unwanted software, or even accidentally deleting important system files.
So I'm looking for advice from people who actually use these tools.

The built-in disk cleanup tool does not do much help. I tested on Windows 11 and Windows 10, lol

The "C drive red" scenario is a classic, and you're right—once the built-in Windows tools stop making a difference, you need a new strategy. Since standard cleanup didn't work, the problem is likely not just ordinary temporary files, but rather specific large items the default tools overlook, like old Windows Update caches, hibernation files, or massive folders you haven't noticed.
Since you are down to less than 20GB, you are in a risky zone. Windows needs free space to update and run page files. You should also know that Compressing your C: drive or using Compact OS (features in tools like DISM++) is risky on an SSD that full—it can cause performance issues.
If after all this you still can't find the best disk cleaner software for Windows 11, the most reliable free method is a Fresh Start.
1. Back up your personal files to an external drive (or OneDrive/Google Drive).
2. Go to Settings > System> Recovery.
3. Click "Reset this PC" and choose "Remove everything."
4. Removing all hidden junk and restoring your full 256GB when prompted, turn ON "Clean drives." This performs a full wipe and reinstall of Windows.

If your C drive is showing red and you're down to less than 20GB free on a 256GB SSD, and the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup hasn't made enough difference, you'll need a more powerful disk cleaner software for Windows 11 that can deeply clean your system.
Using Windows Storage Settings and Storage Sense is an effective way to free up space on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Here's how you can do it:
1. Open Settings: Click on the Start menu and select the gear icon to open Settings.
2. Navigate to Storage: In the Settings window, click on "System" and then select "Storage" from the menu.
3. Enable Storage Sense: Turn on the toggle switch for Storage Sense. This feature automatically frees up space by deleting unnecessary files, such as temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin.
4. Configure Storage Sense: Click on "Configure Storage Sense or run it now" to customize how and when it runs. You can set it to delete temporary files regularly and manage locally available cloud content.
5. Run Storage Sense Manually: If you want immediate results, click the "Clean now" button to start the process.
Additionally, for more thorough cleanup, you can use disk cleaner software for Windows 11. These tools can scan your system for unnecessary files, system caches, and other data taking up space, helping you free up more storage efficiently. Using such disk cleaner software for Windows 11 can simplify the process and optimize your storage management.

This is a fast, lightweight windows 10 disk cleaner software built to instantly show you exactly what’s taking up space on your C drive. Powered by a visual treemap interface, it turns raw storage data into an easy-to-read color-coded layout, so you can spot the biggest space hogs at a glance, no digging through endless folders required. It’s extremely fast and completely safe because it never deletes anything on its own.
Usage Guide: Run WizTree directly, select your C drive from the dropdown menu, and click the Scan button. The tool completes a full scan of a 256GB drive in just 2–5 seconds, much faster than most similar tools. The largest colored blocks on the treemap correspond to your biggest files and folders—right-click any block to open its location in File Explorer, then delete, move, or archive the files you no longer need to free up valuable disk space.
This method lets you use this windows 10 disk cleaner software to reclaim storage safely, with full control over what gets removed.
It’s ideal for regular quick space checks, clearing room before large Windows updates, resolving urgent C drive full errors, and managing storage on laptops with limited space.
However, it can only help you locate large files; it does not automatically clean up junk files, cache or system residual files, so you will still need to delete them manually.
