Windows 10 Search not finding apps and files correctly anymore

I’ve been using Windows 10 for a long time, but recently the built-in Search feature has started becoming unreliable. When I search for apps, files, or system settings, it sometimes shows incomplete results, takes several seconds to respond, or doesn’t find items that are clearly installed on my computer.

The problem doesn’t happen all the time, but it appears randomly during normal use. Restarting the PC can temporarily fix it, but the issue eventually comes back. I have already checked Windows Search settings, indexing options, and basic troubleshooting tools, but nothing seems to solve it permanently.

I don’t want to reinstall Windows 10 just because of a search problem. Is there a proper way to repair or reset Windows Search, rebuild the index correctly, or use another reliable solution? Any advice from people who have fixed this issue would be appreciated.

This process can take a long time and may slow down your PC temporarily. It’s best to let it run when you don't need the computer for other tasks.

  • Your Windows 10 search intermittently omits apps, files, and settings, while restarting restores it only temporarily. That usually points to a stalled Search process or unhealthy index rather than requiring Windows reinstallation. Install pending updates, then run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter from an elevated Command Prompt with msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic. In Task Manager, end SearchUI.exe; Windows starts it again on the next search. Confirm missing file locations are included in Indexing Options, then choose Advanced and Rebuild, allowing the index time to finish. Test a newly created Windows account: if search works there, the fault is profile-specific. Microsoft also provides ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 for Windows 10 version 1903 or later; run that official script as administrator and restore your previous PowerShell execution policy afterward. If the problem continues, note whether files, apps, or settings fail separately and submit those details through Feedb
