Windows 10 freezes up 3 minutes after start up since recent update
If the system freezes a few minutes after startup
If login works but the PC consistently freezes a few minutes after boot (for example, around 5 minutes) following an update, a scheduled task may be involved. One reported case of Windows 10 freezing a few minutes after startup was traced to the scheduled task:
Task Scheduler → Task Scheduler Library → Microsoft → Windows → PI → Secure-Boot-Update
Disabling this task stopped the freezes in that scenario. To try this workaround:
- Boot into Windows (or Safe Mode if needed).
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Browse to Microsoft → Windows → PI.
- Locate Secure-Boot-Update, right‑click, and choose Disable.
- Restart and test whether the freezes at login/shortly after login stop.
This is a workaround; once Microsoft releases a specific fix, re‑enable the task and install the updated patches.
My pc hit this problem at the weekend immediately following installation of two windows updates - KB5121647 and KB5122104. Thank you to this community and T_McCabe, your workaround worked for me and I am most grateful.
I am not particularly technical, and don’t really understand the implications of this workaround. May I ask two supplementary questions:-
- should I reverse out the two recently installed windows updates?
- should I temporarily suspend windows auto updates to prevent reintroducing the issue?
I realise I am on borrowed time with a very old pc not capable of supporting Windows 11. I will need to upgrade soon, but I’d rather it was not forced upon me at no notice!
Thanks in advance.
