Windows 10 downloads all updates at once — how to select only one?

In Windows 10, the default Windows Update mechanism is designed to handle updates collectively, and there isn't a built-in way to selectively download or install individual updates (specific KBs) directly through the standard interface. When you click "Download," all pending updates are downloaded together, and then you can choose which to install afterward, but you can't pick and choose during the download phase.
