Windows 10 Cannot Safely Eject a USB Drive

After connecting a USB flash drive or external hard drive, the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the lower-right corner of the taskbar often fails to appear, making it impossible to eject the device normally via the system tray. As a result, users are forced to unplug the device directly, which increases the risk of data corruption. Restarting File Explorer can temporarily restore the icon, but the problem recurs.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart. This temporarily restores the icon.

  • Hi HenryPark, I would first check whether something is holding the drive open, like File Explorer, OneDrive, antivirus scanning, or a backup tool. If restarting Explorer brings the icon back, also update the USB/chipset drivers and try a different port. Process Explorer can help find an open handle to the drive before unplugging it.
