Hi andrei186,
Yes, It is possible to disable Windows Update from the registry, please copy the below registry values in notepad, save as NoUpdate.reg, and double-click on the file to merge into the registry.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU] "NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001 "AUOptions"=dword:00000002
1. To run cmd in elevated mode, right-click on Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator.
2. Please execute the below commands step by step:
chkdsk c: /f
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
The first command will scan and fix the errors on the system drive, the second will scan and fix system file corruption issues, third and fourth command will use DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool to scan/restore the health of the windows installation image.
I hope these steps could be helpful for you, please do not hesitate to contact me for any further assistance.
File system: NTFS
Cannot block the current disk.
This volume is used by another process
For some reason it does not name this process so I cannot terminate it
- andrei186Dec 17, 2021Brass ContributorHi, SalmanAhmed,
After I successfully executed your instructions with Windows Registry Editor on 20/11/2021, the updated did not disturbed me till tonignt, Now attempting to close Windows, instead of the options "Close" and "Reboot" I am getting "Update and close" and "Update and Reboot".
How shall I kill those updates for good, not just for 27 days? - andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass ContributorIt does not hang, but as I informed, it keeps itself busy doing some job of its own which makes the computer totally unusable for about 9 min every time I loging. Is it designed to work like this?

I'm glad that the system doesn't hang now.
Thanks for the feedback, please do not hesitate for any further assistance, I will welcome the questions you may have. - andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass Contributorthis worked - thank you, Will do next time it hangs. BTW, it does not hang. On the contrary, it seems to be as busy as a bee doing something, And what is frustrating - these activities do not show up in the Task Manager
- andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass ContributorI know but this does not explain why you expect it properly update now while it has been failing doing so for the previous 13 months?
- SalmanAhmedNov 28, 2021Iron Contributor
It is recommended to keep all the latest updates on all the Windows 10 edition, including the preinstalled as well.

Please open Run dialog by pressing Win + R and type eventvwr. msc - andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass ContributorI did exactly this twice before and have done it for the 3rd time not. It reported "success". But I still cannot view these images in the chat, Can you view them?

- andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass ContributorThank you. Yerlier I mentioned that I am frightened with updates because one time the update made my PC unbootable and Microsoft refused to take any responsibility or offer an assistance.
I will do another update, but will you please will you help me understand one thing: I bought this Win10 preinstalled on a brand new HP Pavilion desktop 13 months ago. Until you helped me to block updates early this week, it was doing updates regularly (last tiome about a week ago) and yet failed to get updated to the most current release of Windows 10 (21H2).
What makes you think that if I make another update, it will update properly? Do I need this time to run the update with some specific parameters? - andrei186Nov 28, 2021Brass ContributorHi, SalmanAhmed! I've been away from Internet for the last two days, hence the delay.
I googled how to run Event Viewer and it instructed "Click in the Search field in the bottom left corner of your screen. Search for Event Viewer. Click on Event Viewer in the search results.
The Event Viewer appears"
I did, but it found nothing on my windows 10 installation. All it found was on the Internet whth the same instructions which I just executed.
How shall I proceed from here?
PS. Please note that my Win-10 is an official and licenced one. I bough it preinstalled with brabd new HP desktop - SalmanAhmedNov 26, 2021Iron Contributor

Hi andrei186 ,
Your system is not updated to the most current release of Windows 10 (21H2), I would suggest you run Windows Update as it will fix a lot of security issues and improve the system performance. After successfully updating to 21H2, you may turn off the update as you mentioned earlier.

Hi andrei186,
You can attach the screenshot by clicking the "Open full text editor", as shown in screenshot attached,
- andrei186Nov 25, 2021Brass ContributorThank you for being persistance.
I've been sharing screenshots on tens of forums for the last 15 year, but this here Microsoft is the first one which makes me puzzled (see my comment about failed attempt to send you screenshot about unwanted gudget popping up on my screen,
The same info about version of my Windows is available in text form in Control Panel-->System, I copy it here:
Windows 10 Home for one language
Version 20H2
Build 19042.1348
Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0
Is this sufficient? - andrei186Nov 25, 2021Brass ContributorI know how to make scrinshots and safe them to a jpg file. My problem is I cannot figure out how to post images in this chat - yeaterday I tried three times to post-upload the screenshot of that annoing gadget which keeps popping up in my right-bottom corner which you requested. It seemed to go OK (except the third time when I got a message that I have already uploaded the same two times), but I failed to find the images in the chat. Do you see them?
- SalmanAhmedNov 25, 2021Iron Contributor
You can take a screenshot through shortcut keys by pressing Win + Shift + S together.

Hi andrei186,
I just went through the comment regarding the computer taking 9 minutes to open Windows Explorer or the initiation process. I would like to see the version of Windows 10 that you are using so that I will be able to suggest the proper solution.
Press Win + R to launch RUN, and type Winver, and share the screenshot of the About Windows dialog box. After that, I will be able to suggest either you should upgrade or downgrade your operating system.
- andrei186Nov 24, 2021Brass ContributorI do not quite understand how this chat is working. I pressed Reply button, then pressed
Open full text editor
Then pressed the icon of photocamera. It offered to drop in or select an image, I did select two screnshot - full screen and the offending gadget.
It shown the process of uploading. When completed I preessed POST. It reported success. Yet I still cannot see the pictures uploaded and posted. Can you? - andrei186Nov 24, 2021Brass Contributor

Hi andrei186
Can you please share the screenshot of the issue, it is not possible to identify the issue from the URL that you've shared.
- andrei186Nov 24, 2021Brass ContributorHi, SalmanAhmed.
Please will you teach me how to get rid of another Microsoft bell and whistle which got itself attached to my screen afte the last update. It shows up regularly in the right bottom and has no buttons to close is. It has no name. It is about 1/4 of the screen and looks like news page with weather, sport, currency exchange rates and local gossips. (I made a screenshot but cannot attach it here). It has a "Home page" icon in its upper left corner which leads to
https://www.msn.com/ru-ru/feed?cvid=a252e28a94ec4d6fe4a92edc90f2aa85&ocid=winp1taskbar
Really annoing thing.
I asked here a week ago how to kill it, but so far no comments - andrei186Nov 21, 2021Brass ContributorThank you. Following your instructions I managed to make changes to the Rgistry - will wait and see if the updates will be back. Yet my original problem - too long to fully boot - is back. This morning after I entered login-password. it took 9 minuts to open Windows Explorer, navigate to the the nesessary folder and open a text file with Notepad. Only after those initial 9 min it started working normaly. I do not dare to abuse your time for this problem/ Instead I decided that every time I start Windows, I go to the kitchen and have good cup of tea while it is loading.
An alternative would be to downgrade Wind-10 to old good Win-7. Is it possible? - andrei186Nov 21, 2021Brass Contributorplease ignore my previous message. I copied to NoUpdate.reg only the line 3, 4 and 5 thinking that the first line is just a greeting from Regedit. After I added this fist line and the second empty line, the changes to the regisry were accepted
- andrei186Nov 21, 2021Brass Contributorthank you. Now that I created NoUpdate.reg as you orderd using Notepad, and clicked on it, I got an error from Registry Editor saying:
You cannot import "C:\NoUpdate.reg": this file is not a registy data file. You can import only binary files of this regisry
