Why I can't download Windows 10 ISO as it keeps failing
Fido works by querying Microsoft's download API to get the official retail ISO links if the Windows ISO download failing, then downloading them directly. This is the same mechanism Rufus uses, but you can run it standalone in a PowerShell window.
To use it, open PowerShell and run this command:
powershell
iex (irm 'https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pbatard/Fido/master/Fido.ps1').Substring(3)
This downloads and executes Fido directly in memory, so you don't even need to save a file first . The script will then prompt you to select the Windows version, release, language, and architecture. After making your selections, it either downloads the ISO automatically or displays the direct URL for you to use.
Why This Fits Your Requirements
- Completely free and open-source: Fido is licensed under GPL v3 and is maintained by the author of Rufus .
- Script-based: It runs entirely in PowerShell, no GUI or installation required.
- Challenging: You need to understand PowerShell execution and potentially adjust execution policy settings.
Solves the actual problem: It bypasses the broken Media Creation Tool and the IP-based blocks Microsoft sometimes applies to download pages .
If the Windows ISO download failing about execution policy, run Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope Process first, then try the command again. The script may also fail if Microsoft is actively blocking your IP range, but it's far more reliable than the standard download methods when those are failing.
