Why I am unable to format a usb stick after using rufus

I used Rufus to create a bootable USB, but now I cannot format the drive back to normal. Windows Disk Management and the regular format tool both fail. They either give an access denied error, show the drive as write-protected, or only offer RAW format. The drive does not appear with its full capacity. I've tried the quick format option and full format in Explorer without success.

I am now completely unable to formate a usb stick after using rufus. What steps can I take to completely wipe this USB and restore it to a single, usable FAT32 or NTFS partition? I am on Windows 10.

The reason is that Rufus has broken the partition table of the USB and it is no longer seen as a valid storage device. Like the others has mentioned, you have to use a partition utility to reformat the USB in order to make it usable.

You can follow the trick in this post to solve the issue:

I faced the same issue and had to use a dedicated disk partition tool later.

If you can't format usb drive after using rufus on Windows 10 PC? and the drive seems to be stuck or inaccessible, using Storage Spaces Reset can sometimes help resolve the problem. This method essentially resets the storage configuration on your drive, allowing you to reformat it from scratch.

Important: Before proceeding, please note that using Storage Spaces Reset will erase all data on the USB drive. Make sure you have backed up any important files.

Steps to use Storage Spaces Reset when you can't format USB drive after using Rufus on Windows PC:

    1. Open PowerShell as Administrator

    • Press Windows + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).

    2. Identify the USB Drive

    • Type the following command and press Enter:
    • Get-PhysicalDisk
    • Note the FriendlyName or UniqueId corresponding to your USB drive.

    3. Reset the Storage Space for the USB Drive

    Run this command:

    Reset-PhysicalDisk -UniqueId "Your-Device-UniqueId"

    • Replace "Your-Device-UniqueId" with the actual UniqueId or FriendlyName of your USB drive.
    • If you prefer, you can list all disks with:

    Get-PhysicalDisk

    and identify your drive accordingly.

    4. Reinitialize and Format the Drive

    • After the reset, you should be able to reformat the USB drive normally:
    • Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc).
    • Locate your USB drive.
    • Right-click and choose Format.

If you are unable to format USB after using Rufus, using Windows Disk Management might seem like a straightforward solution. However, in many cases, Disk Management alone cannot resolve the issue, especially if the drive is write-protected, corrupted, or has a damaged partition table caused by Rufus.

    Why Disk Management Might Fail

    • Disk Management may not display the full capacity of the USB or show it as "RAW."
    • It may refuse to format the drive, giving errors like "Access Denied" or "The disk is write-protected."
    • Any residual bootable or partition data created by Rufus can prevent standard formatting.

Using Disk Management if unable to format USB after using Rufus:

    1. Open Disk Management:

Right-click the Start button and select Disk Management.

Or press Win + X and choose Disk Management.

    2. Locate your USB drive:

It may appear as Removable or with a specific drive letter.

The drive might show as Unallocated, RAW, or with a partition that cannot be deleted.

    3. Attempt to delete the partition:

Right-click the partition on the USB and select Delete Volume.

If this option is greyed out or fails, it indicates a deeper issue such as write protection.

    4. Create a new volume:

If the partition is successfully deleted and the space shows as unallocated, right-click it and select New Simple Volume.

Follow the wizard to format the drive as FAT32 or NTFS.

  • If you can't format USB drive after using Rufus on Windows PC, using GParted is an excellent solution. GParted is a powerful, free partition editor that runs from a bootable live environment, allowing you to manage and format drives that Windows might struggle with.

How to use GParted if you can't format USB drive after using Rufus:

    1. Download GParted Live

    • Visit the official GParted website and download the GParted Live ISO file.

    2. Create a Bootable GParted USB Drive

    • Use Rufus or another tool to create a bootable USB with the GParted ISO.
    • Insert a different USB drive (not the one you're trying to format) and use Rufus to make it bootable with GParted.

    3. Boot from the GParted USB

    • Restart your computer and boot from the GParted USB. You may need to change the boot order in BIOS/UEFI settings.
    • Once GParted loads, you'll see a graphical interface similar to Windows.

    4. Locate Your USB Drive

    • In GParted, find your USB drive in the dropdown menu or the drive list. Be very careful to select the correct drive to avoid data loss on other drives.

    5. Delete Existing Partitions

    • Right-click on each partition of the USB drive and select Delete.
    • Apply the changes by clicking the Apply button (checkmark icon).

    6. Create a New Partition Table and Format

    • With the drive now empty, go to Device > Create Partition Table.
    • Choose the desired partition table type (e.g., MS-DOS or GPT).
    • After creating the partition table, right-click on the unallocated space and select New.
    • Choose the file system (e.g., FAT32, NTFS), then click Add.
    • Click the Apply button to execute all changes.

    7. Reboot into Windows

    • Once the process is complete, shut down your PC.
    • Remove the GParted USB and restart your Windows PC.
    • Your USB drive should now be properly formatted and usable.

If Windows-based repair methods fail, this alternative approach with GParted offers a reliable solution for unable to format a usb stick after using rufus—and it only requires a separate USB drive with Linux boot capability:

If you have another USB and can boot Linux:

    1. Create an Ubuntu bootable drive on a spare drive.

    2. Boot the faulty device into Ubuntu, selecting the non-installation trial mode.

    3. Open Software

    4. Locate the faulty USB drive, delete all existing partitions → create a new primary partition → format to the target file system (FAT32).

    Pros

    • Completely bypasses Windows system permissions or partition restrictions on USB drives, resolving the “unable to format a USB stick after using Rufus” issue that cannot be fixed within Windows.

    • The GParted tool offers professional functionality, supporting various partition formats, ensuring high compatibility for the USB drive post-formatting.
    • Entire process is free from bundled software; the image is an official, clean version ensuring security.

    Cons

    • Presents an operational barrier for complete Windows novices, requiring mastery of foundational steps like USB boot and BIOS configuration.

    • Creating the bootable drive and initiating boot sequence is time-consuming, offering lower efficiency compared to native Windows tools.

    • On older hardware, Ubuntu may experience startup lag or fail to detect the USB drive.
