Why Does Windows Update Start Right Before I Need to Shut Down?

Hi,

This is normal behavior, and it’s rarely random. Windows usually downloads updates in the background while you work, but the final install step needs a restart. So whenever you shut down, Windows finishes the pending update first, which is why it always seems to start right when you’re leaving. The wait is long because the main installation happens during the shutdown and startup phase, and slower drives make that worse.

You don’t have to disable updates to avoid this. These options help:

1. Choose when the restart happens. Go to Settings > Windows Update. If an update is pending, select Schedule the restart and pick a time when you’re away from the PC, such as overnight or during lunch.
2. Set your active hours. Under Windows Update > Advanced options, set active hours that cover your working day so Windows doesn’t restart the PC during that time.
3. Check the “Get me up to date” setting. On Windows 11, if this option is on (Windows Update > Advanced options), Windows restarts as soon as possible to apply updates. Turn it off. Turning on Notify me when a restart is required is also useful.
4. Install at the start of a break, not the end. If you see Update and shut down or Update and restart in the power menu, there’s a pending update. Pick it when you step away for lunch or finish for the day, rather than when you’re about to run out the door.
5. Pause as a short-term fix. If you have an important deadline, you can pause updates for a limited time from the Windows Update page. Resume them afterward so you don’t miss security patches.

If this is a work PC, your IT team may control the update schedule through policy, and some of these settings could be greyed out. In that case, ask them to adjust the maintenance window.

Menu names can vary a little between Windows builds, but these settings exist in current versions of Windows 10 and 11.
