Why can a nearly empty drive still have very little free space?

My external drive shows as nearly empty with only a few folders visible, yet Windows reports that less than 5% of the total capacity remains available as free space. I have already enabled viewing of hidden and system files, but I cannot find what is consuming the storage, and I need to understand why this discrepancy exists and how to recover the missing space without formatting the entire drive.

Your action of enabling "Show hidden files" likely revealed two critical, system-protected folders that you might not have noticed before.
