What is the best CD burning software for Windows 11/10?
I've recently gone back to burning CDs for archiving important files and creating audio discs for older car stereos that don't support Bluetooth or USB playback. The problem is that the CD burning feature is no longer available in Windows 11. In addition, many of the well-known CD burner software from years past were designed for older versions of Windows, and it's not always clear whether they run reliably on Windows 11 or 10.
With so many outdated or abandoned options out there, it can be difficult to know what's still trustworthy and fully compatible with modern Windows systems.
Could anyone recommend the best CD burning software currently available on Windows 11 or 10? I'm looking for something that supports both audio CD and data disc burning, and works reliably on modern hardware.
Thank you!

Let me explain why File Explorer might be considered the best CD burning software for Windows computer. File Explorer is the folder management system built into every Windows computer. What many people don't realize is that it contains a fully functional, integrated best CD burning software that requires no installation, no third-party downloads, and no payments . When you insert a blank CD into your optical drive, Windows automatically detects it and offers to help you burn files.
For your goal of archiving important files, this process is straightforward. The official Microsoft documentation outlines these steps :
Step 1: Insert a blank CD-R into your optical drive. Windows may automatically open a dialog box asking what you want to do. If this happens, select "Burn files to disc" .
Step 2: If the dialog box does not appear automatically, open File Explorer by pressing Windows + E. Find your CD/DVD drive under "This PC" and double-click it.
Step 3: Windows will ask you to name the disc and choose how you want to use it. For archiving files that you will read on other computers or devices, select "With a CD/DVD player" . This creates a disc that is finalized and compatible with most standard CD and DVD players .
Step 4: Windows will format the disc and prepare it for burning. This takes only a few seconds.
Step 5: Drag the files and folders you want to archive into the CD drive window. You can also copy and paste them. You will see the files appear in the window, but at this point they are not actually burned—they are just waiting in a temporary list .
Step 6: When you have added all your files, look at the top of the File Explorer window. You should see a "Manage" tab. Click it, then select "Finish burning" or "Burn to disc" .
Step 7: Give your disc a name, then click Next. Windows will burn your files to the disc. When finished, the disc will eject automatically.

Windows Media Player Legacy - This is likely the most obscure and overlooked method for free CD burning software for Windows 11/10. Microsoft removed the CD burning feature from the modern Windows Media Player app, but the classic "Legacy" version is still hidden on your system.
How to find and use it:
Step 1: Launch Windows Media Player Legacy and click the Burn tab in the upper-right corner.
Step 2: Insert a blank CD-R into your optical drive. (Note that some users have reported occasional issues with CD-RW discs; standard CD-R discs tend to be more reliable for car stereos) .
Step 3: Click the Burn options menu (usually represented by a small checkmark or icon) and verify that "Audio CD" is selected as the format .
Step 4: Create your burn list by dragging music files from your library—or directly from File Explorer—into the burn list area on the right side of the window. The player will show you how much space remains on the disc.
Step 5: When you are ready, click the "Start burn" button.
Windows Media Player Legacy is a functional, completely free CD burning software for Windows 11/10 that comes built right into your operating system. It requires no downloads, no installations, and no paid upgrades. For basic audio CD creation and data archiving, it gets the job done.
