What is the best ai photo enhancer for improving image quality?

Hi everyone,

just scanned a lot of my old family photos but 50% of them are pretty blurry, grainy, or just faded. A friend mentioned that there are now "AI photo enhancers" that can automatically fix these kinds of issues. It sounds almost like magic, but I have no idea where to start.

I don't need a bunch of fancy editing tools; I just want to upload a photo and have the program make it clearer and sharper. It would be amazing to bring some of these old pictures back to life, especially the ones of my grandparents.

If you've used any of these AI photo enhancers yourself, I'd love to hear which one you liked best. Which one gave you the best results for making blurry faces clear and removing that old photo grain?

Thank you so much for the help!

    Hi there,

You’re absolutely right! AI photo enhancement has made remarkable progress over the past couple of years. Tools that once required expert manual retouching can now restore sharpness, color, and detail with a single upload. Since your focus is on clarity and ease of use rather than complex editing, here are some of the most reliable and user-friendly options worth considering:

    1. Microsoft Designer (and Bing Image Creator Enhancements)
Microsoft has been quietly building impressive AI-based image enhancement directly into its ecosystem. If you use Microsoft Designer or Bing Image Creator, you’ll notice that uploaded or generated images can be “auto-enhanced” for contrast, clarity, and tone balance. It’s not marketed as a traditional photo restorer, but it produces clean, natural results with almost no effort.
    2. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with AI Denoise and Enhance
Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop now include “Enhance Details” and “Denoise” powered by Adobe Sensei AI. These are excellent for scanned images: they remove grain, recover lost texture, and boost resolution while keeping skin tones realistic. If you already have a Creative Cloud plan, it’s a great built-in option.
    3. Topaz Photo AI
Often mentioned by photographers and archivists, Topaz Photo AI specializes in sharpening, noise reduction, and upscaling — all automated by AI. It’s particularly effective for old portraits where faces have become soft or blurred. The results tend to look natural rather than overly processed, which is key for family photos.
    4. Remini (Web and Mobile App)
Remini has become popular for quick face restoration. It uses facial enhancement models to make blurred or low-resolution faces appear clearer. It’s ideal for snapshots or portraits, though results can sometimes look a bit too “perfect” if pushed too far — moderation is key.
    5. VanceAI and Let’s Enhance
Both are browser-based platforms that don’t require installation. You upload your scanned images, select “Enhance” or “Restore,” and download the improved version. These are great for batch processing large numbers of old photos without having to learn editing tools.

    Tips for Best Results:

    • Scan at high resolution first — even the best AI tools can’t invent missing details from very low-quality scans.
    • Use gentle enhancement settings to keep a natural, authentic look.
    • Combine tools — for instance, restore with Remini, then fine-tune tone and color in Lightroom or Microsoft Photos.

If you’re already in the Microsoft ecosystem, start with Microsoft Photos (Windows 11). its built-in Auto Enhance and Spot Fix features have quietly become quite capable thanks to AI integration.

Bringing old family photos back to life is a wonderful project. With today’s AI tools, you’ll likely be amazed by how much warmth and clarity you can recover from those faded memories.

Hope this helps you get started — and enjoy the restoration process!

DeepAI's Image Upscaler is a great free option if you're looking for an AI photo enhancer. It specializes in increasing the resolution of images while preserving quality, making it ideal for restoring details in low-resolution or blurry photos.

    Steps:

    1. Visit DeepAI Image Upscaler.
    2. Upload your image.
    3. Wait for the AI to process.
    4. Download the enhanced, higher-resolution version.

Primarily focused on upscaling, so it may not include all enhancement features like noise reduction or color correction.
Output quality depends on the input image; very low-quality images may not improve significantly.

If you don’t want to use any third-party tools, Windows and macOS actually give you a few simple ways to clean things up. On Windows 11, you can open your scan in the built-in Photos app, click Edit → Adjustments, and use Clarity, Contrast, and Sharpness sliders — it’s basic, but surprisingly effective.

If you’re comfortable with command line, you can also use PowerShell’s magsick (from ImageMagsick, built into some systems) for batch enhancement:

    magsick input.jpg -sharpen 0x1.5 -contrast -brightness-contrast 10x20 output.jpg

It’s not true “AI photo enhancer” magic, but it still makes those faded or blurry scans look a lot better without installing anything extra.

Yeah, I’ve been there — I scanned a bunch of old family photos too, and about half were blurry or grainy. Honestly, the best AI photo enhancer I’ve used so far is Topaz Photo AI — it’s crazy good at making faces sharp again and cleaning up old scans without killing the details. You just drop a photo in and let it do its magic.

If you prefer something free and command-line based, try Real-ESRGAN or GFPGAN — both are open-source AI photo enhancer tools that you can run locally. Here’s how I usually do it:

    # 1. Install dependencies
    pip install realesrgan

    # 2. Enhance a single photo
    realesrgan-ncnn-vulkan -i input.jpg -o output.jpg

    # 3. Or enhance all photos in a folder
    for %f in (*.jpg) do realesrgan-ncnn-vulkan -i "%f" -o "enhanced\%~nf.jpg"

And for face restoration with GFPGAN, this works great:

    pip install gfpgan python -m gfpgan -i input.jpg -o output --upscale 2

Both can turn old, faded pictures into something you’d actually want to frame again — it’s like watching your memories come back to life.

  • The "best" AI photo enhancer often depends on what you need it for, such as upscaling, restoring old photos, or general enhancement.

My Choice: Topaz Photo AI Enhancer (best overall for professional quality & upscaling)

Primary Strength: All-in-one quality improvement including noise reduction, sharpening, and aggressive upscaling without losing detail.

    Key Features:

    • Autopilot: Automatically analyzes your image and applies the right amount of noise reduction, sharpening, and upscaling.
    • High-Quality Upscaling: Excellent for enlarging low-resolution photos for print or high-resolution screens (up to 8x).
    • Dedicated AI Models: Uses separate, specialized AI models for denoising, sharpening, and recovery for the cleanest results.
    • Format/Platform: Desktop software (Windows/Mac), available as a standalone app or a plugin for programs like Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom.

I am using Fotor, one of the most popular and best AI photo enhancer available for now!

Fotor is an all-in-one AI-powered creative platform that provides tools for photo editing, graphic design, and content generation. It is available as an online editor, desktop application, and mobile app. It's often recognized for making professional-quality editing accessible to people without advanced design skills.

    Step 1: Upload Your Photo

Go to the Fotor Website or open the Fotor AI photo enhancer app. Navigate to the Photo Editor section.

Click the "Open Image" or "Upload" button, or simply drag and drop the image file (JPG, PNG, etc.) from your computer onto the workspace.

Step 2: Apply the AI Image Enhancer Tool

Once your photo is loaded, look for the main editing panel, usually on the left side. Find the "AI Tools" or "Adjust" menu. Click on the "1-Tap Enhance" or "AI Photo Enhancer" button.

The AI instantly analyzes the photo, automatically applying a mix of adjustments, including correcting exposure and lighting, boosting color saturation and contrast and sharpening blurred details and reducing digital noise.

    Step 3: Review and Download

After the AI finishes processing (which is usually a few seconds), the enhanced photo will appear. You can often click a "Compare" button to see a side-by-side view of the "Before" (original) and "After" (enhanced) photo.

If you are satisfied, click the "Download" or "Export" button, and save your new high-quality photo (e.g., in JPG or PNG format).

P.S. If you want to fine-tune the result, you can use the other non-AI tools in the editor after applying the 1-Tap Enhance

Yes. AI photo enhancer is now a better choice than the traditional photo editing software if you want to improve the quality of old photos.

An AI photo enhancer is a sophisticated software tool that uses artificial intelligence (specifically deep learning and neural networks) to automatically analyze and improve the quality of a digital image. Instead of manually adjusting settings like a traditional editor, the AI is trained on millions of images to understand what a "good" photo should look like and how to fix common issues.

Why AI photo enhancer is more recommended now? It can perform complex, professional-grade edits in seconds with a single click or tap, which would take a human editor a long time to achieve manually. In addition, it applies consistent, high-quality enhancements to dozens or hundreds of photos at once, a huge time-saver for businesses, e-commerce, and content creators.

Most importantly, you don't need to be a photography expert or know how to use complex software like Photoshop. The AI handles the technical decisions, making professional results accessible to everyone.
