As of 2025, the right way to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is to use Microsoft’s official Media Creation Tool, as the old free-upgrade loophole is no longer guaranteed to work. In most cases, you’ll need to purchase a valid Windows 10 license key to activate your system after the upgrade.
Here’s the most common and recommended process:
- Back up your files – Always start by saving important documents, photos, and software keys to an external drive or cloud.
- Check hardware compatibility – Make sure your PC meets Windows 10 requirements (most systems that ran Windows 7 reasonably well can handle Windows 10).
- Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s website on your Windows 7 PC.
- Run the tool and choose Upgrade this PC now.
- When prompted, select Keep personal files and apps if you want to preserve your data and settings.
- Enter a valid Windows 10 product key when asked, or complete the upgrade and activate later through Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
